5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The 100th birthday of an esteemed Texan is indeed |

6 | 7 | | cause for celebration, and Lois Miller of Friona is marking this |
---|
7 | 8 | | momentous milestone in her life on April 5, 2015; and |
---|
8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Born in Deaf Smith County in 1915, the former Lois |
---|
9 | 10 | | Agnes Smith is the daughter of Lewis Allen "L. A." Smith and Bessie |
---|
10 | 11 | | Smith; growing up on the family farm, she helped pick cotton with |
---|
11 | 12 | | her four younger sisters, Syble, Ella, Sara, and Doris, and learned |
---|
12 | 13 | | to drive a full cotton truck at an early age; and |
---|
13 | 14 | | WHEREAS, She attended West Texas State College for two years, |
---|
14 | 15 | | and in 1935, she was joined in matrimony to Norman Robert Miller; |
---|
15 | 16 | | the couple became the proud parents of four children, Bob, Lucy |
---|
16 | 17 | | Beth, Gail, and Bill; while they resided in Dawn, Mrs. Miller |
---|
17 | 18 | | worked in the cafeteria and at the grain elevator; and |
---|
18 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Following the untimely passing of Mr. Miller in |
---|
19 | 20 | | 1960, Mrs. Miller returned to West Texas State and completed her |
---|
20 | 21 | | bachelor's degree; she began teaching fourth grade in Friona, and |
---|
21 | 22 | | although she subsequently worked briefly in Hereford and Dawn, she |
---|
22 | 23 | | retained allegiance to her adopted hometown of Friona; and |
---|
23 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Mrs. Miller concluded a career spanning two decades |
---|
24 | 25 | | in 1983, but she continued to teach Sunday school, and she was |
---|
25 | 26 | | active in Study Club and Delta Kappa Gamma; in addition, she gave |
---|
26 | 27 | | piano lessons, and she gardened and painted; she also helped care |
---|
27 | 28 | | for her 6 grandchildren when they were small, and later, she became |
---|
28 | 29 | | a favorite companion to her 11 great-grandchildren; today, the |
---|
29 | 30 | | younger generations of her family continue to regard her as a |
---|
30 | 31 | | formidable competitor in any game they might play together; she |
---|
31 | 32 | | enjoys working crossword puzzles and reads voraciously, and she |
---|
32 | 33 | | credits her good health and longevity to staying physically and |
---|
33 | 34 | | mentally active, as well as to drinking plenty of water; and |
---|
34 | 35 | | WHEREAS, Blessed with the affection of a host of loved ones, |
---|
35 | 36 | | Lois Miller has gracefully reached the century mark, and she |
---|
36 | 37 | | continues to enrich the lives of all who are fortunate enough to |
---|
37 | 38 | | know her; now, therefore, be it |
---|
38 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |
---|
39 | 40 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Lois Miller on the joyous occasion |
---|
40 | 41 | | of her 100th birthday and extend to her sincere best wishes for |

41 | 42 | | continued happiness; and, be it further |

42 | 43 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
