45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, The 100th birthday of an esteemed Texan is indeed
67 cause for celebration, and Lois Miller of Friona is marking this
78 momentous milestone in her life on April 5, 2015; and
89 WHEREAS, Born in Deaf Smith County in 1915, the former Lois
910 Agnes Smith is the daughter of Lewis Allen "L. A." Smith and Bessie
1011 Smith; growing up on the family farm, she helped pick cotton with
1112 her four younger sisters, Syble, Ella, Sara, and Doris, and learned
1213 to drive a full cotton truck at an early age; and
1314 WHEREAS, She attended West Texas State College for two years,
1415 and in 1935, she was joined in matrimony to Norman Robert Miller;
1516 the couple became the proud parents of four children, Bob, Lucy
1617 Beth, Gail, and Bill; while they resided in Dawn, Mrs. Miller
1718 worked in the cafeteria and at the grain elevator; and
1819 WHEREAS, Following the untimely passing of Mr. Miller in
1920 1960, Mrs. Miller returned to West Texas State and completed her
2021 bachelor's degree; she began teaching fourth grade in Friona, and
2122 although she subsequently worked briefly in Hereford and Dawn, she
2223 retained allegiance to her adopted hometown of Friona; and
2324 WHEREAS, Mrs. Miller concluded a career spanning two decades
2425 in 1983, but she continued to teach Sunday school, and she was
2526 active in Study Club and Delta Kappa Gamma; in addition, she gave
2627 piano lessons, and she gardened and painted; she also helped care
2728 for her 6 grandchildren when they were small, and later, she became
2829 a favorite companion to her 11 great-grandchildren; today, the
2930 younger generations of her family continue to regard her as a
3031 formidable competitor in any game they might play together; she
3132 enjoys working crossword puzzles and reads voraciously, and she
3233 credits her good health and longevity to staying physically and
3334 mentally active, as well as to drinking plenty of water; and
3435 WHEREAS, Blessed with the affection of a host of loved ones,
3536 Lois Miller has gracefully reached the century mark, and she
3637 continues to enrich the lives of all who are fortunate enough to
3738 know her; now, therefore, be it
3839 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
3940 Legislature hereby congratulate Lois Miller on the joyous occasion
4041 of her 100th birthday and extend to her sincere best wishes for
4142 continued happiness; and, be it further
4243 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4344 prepared for her as an expression of high regard by the Texas House
4445 of Representatives.
