45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, A life made rich through meaningful service drew to
67 a close when Cora Brown of Lamesa passed away on December 14, 2014,
78 at the age of 64; and
89 WHEREAS, The former Cora Ivory was born on June 14, 1950, in
910 Plainview to Henry and Willie Mae Ivory; the family moved to
1011 Quitaque, and she graduated from Silverton High School before going
1112 on to receive a degree in criminal justice from Wayland Baptist
1213 University; she further pursued her education at Sam Houston State
1314 University, where she graduated in the inaugural class of the Bill
1415 Blackwood Law Enforcement Management Institute of Texas; and
1516 WHEREAS, In October 1974, Ms. Brown became the first woman to
1617 be sworn in as an officer of the Plainview Police Department; she
1718 was also the first female officer hired by the Lamesa Police
1819 Department, and from August 1975 to January 1986, she served as a
1920 juvenile officer and investigator; she then worked as a criminal
2021 investigator and victim's witness coordinator for the 106th
2122 Judicial District Attorney's Office until December 1996; for the
2223 past 17 years, she had worked as the director of the Dawson County
2324 Senior Center; and
2425 WHEREAS, In addition to her outstanding career in law
2526 enforcement, Ms. Brown dedicated a great deal of time and energy to
2627 volunteer work; she served for 27 years as a member and a president
2728 of the Lamesa Independent School District board, and she was active
2829 with many other groups, including the local Dawson County United
2930 Way, the Lamesa Boys and Girls Club, and West Texas Opportunities,
3031 Inc.; for the past 15 years, she had also served as pastor of Mount
3132 Olive Baptist Church in Lamesa; and
3233 WHEREAS, Ms. Brown and her husband, Charlie, enjoyed a
3334 rewarding marriage of nearly four decades, and they became the
3435 proud parents of four children, Geoffrey, Ebony, Pamela, and Joe;
3536 and
3637 WHEREAS, Devoted to her family and community, Cora Brown will
3738 be deeply missed, and her leadership, strength of character, and
3839 generosity of spirit will forever inspire all those who had the good
3940 fortune to know her; now, therefore, be it
4041 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
4142 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Cora Brown and
4243 extend sincere sympathy to the members of her family: to her
4344 husband, Charlie Brown; to her daughters, Ebony Benton and her
4445 husband, Al, and Pamela McDonald; to her son, Joe Williams; to her
4546 granddaughter, Elizabeth Newsome; to her six grandchildren and her
4647 three great-grandchildren; to her sisters, Ella Oliver, Nellie
4748 Polley and her husband, Oliver Roberts, Kathryn Davis and her
4849 husband, Charles, Henrietta Scoggins and her husband, Finis, and
4950 Dixie Carol Clark and her husband, Jerry; to her brothers, Joshua
5051 Ivory, Billy Ivory and his wife, Linda, Phineas L. Ivory and his
5152 wife, Marguerite, and Clarence E. Ivory; and to her other relatives
5253 and many friends; and, be it further
5354 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5455 prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of
5556 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Cora Brown.
