5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, A life made rich through meaningful service drew to |

6 | 7 | | a close when Cora Brown of Lamesa passed away on December 14, 2014, |

7 | 8 | | at the age of 64; and |

8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, The former Cora Ivory was born on June 14, 1950, in |
---|
9 | 10 | | Plainview to Henry and Willie Mae Ivory; the family moved to |
---|
10 | 11 | | Quitaque, and she graduated from Silverton High School before going |
---|
11 | 12 | | on to receive a degree in criminal justice from Wayland Baptist |
---|
12 | 13 | | University; she further pursued her education at Sam Houston State |
---|
13 | 14 | | University, where she graduated in the inaugural class of the Bill |
---|
14 | 15 | | Blackwood Law Enforcement Management Institute of Texas; and |
---|
15 | 16 | | WHEREAS, In October 1974, Ms. Brown became the first woman to |
---|
16 | 17 | | be sworn in as an officer of the Plainview Police Department; she |
---|
17 | 18 | | was also the first female officer hired by the Lamesa Police |
---|
18 | 19 | | Department, and from August 1975 to January 1986, she served as a |
---|
19 | 20 | | juvenile officer and investigator; she then worked as a criminal |
---|
20 | 21 | | investigator and victim's witness coordinator for the 106th |
---|
21 | 22 | | Judicial District Attorney's Office until December 1996; for the |
---|
22 | 23 | | past 17 years, she had worked as the director of the Dawson County |
---|
23 | 24 | | Senior Center; and |
---|
24 | 25 | | WHEREAS, In addition to her outstanding career in law |
---|
25 | 26 | | enforcement, Ms. Brown dedicated a great deal of time and energy to |
---|
26 | 27 | | volunteer work; she served for 27 years as a member and a president |
---|
27 | 28 | | of the Lamesa Independent School District board, and she was active |
---|
28 | 29 | | with many other groups, including the local Dawson County United |
---|
29 | 30 | | Way, the Lamesa Boys and Girls Club, and West Texas Opportunities, |
---|
30 | 31 | | Inc.; for the past 15 years, she had also served as pastor of Mount |
---|
31 | 32 | | Olive Baptist Church in Lamesa; and |
---|
32 | 33 | | WHEREAS, Ms. Brown and her husband, Charlie, enjoyed a |
---|
33 | 34 | | rewarding marriage of nearly four decades, and they became the |
---|
34 | 35 | | proud parents of four children, Geoffrey, Ebony, Pamela, and Joe; |
---|
35 | 36 | | and |
---|
36 | 37 | | WHEREAS, Devoted to her family and community, Cora Brown will |
---|
37 | 38 | | be deeply missed, and her leadership, strength of character, and |
---|
38 | 39 | | generosity of spirit will forever inspire all those who had the good |

39 | 40 | | fortune to know her; now, therefore, be it |
---|
40 | 41 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |

41 | 42 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Cora Brown and |
