45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, The citizens of Brady are mourning the loss of
67 police chief Charles Edward Derrick, who passed away on December
78 21, 2014, at the age of 57; and
89 WHEREAS, Charlie Derrick was born in Dallas to Charles and
910 Mary Derrick on August 25, 1957; he graduated from the Texas
1011 Department of Public Safety Academy in 1980 and was assigned to the
1112 driver's license division in Farmers Branch for one year; this fine
1213 officer then realized a lifelong dream in 1981, when he became a
1314 highway patrol officer; he served in that capacity in Corsicana for
1415 eight years and later worked as a narcotics officer and trainer in
1516 Del Rio, Austin, and San Angelo; and
1617 WHEREAS, Chief Derrick was a member of the DPS Post-Seizure
1718 Analysis Team from 1997 to 2001, and during that time he also
1819 attended the FBI Academy; after returning to narcotics training for
1920 a time, he spent six years as gun range master at the DPS firearms
2021 range in Florence, where he worked with recruits until his
2122 retirement in 2009; and
2223 WHEREAS, Following his exemplary tenure with DPS, Chief
2324 Derrick moved to Brady and assumed the post of chief of police;
2425 during his more than five years in that office, he set an inspiring
2526 example of professionalism and integrity while admirably serving
2627 the citizens of Brady and McCulloch County; and
2728 WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Chief Derrick enjoyed the love
2829 and support of his wife of more than three decades, Chris Derrick,
2930 and he took great pride in their three sons, Jason, Stephen, and
3031 Samuel, as well as their five grandchildren; a man of deep faith, he
3132 was an active congregant of Hill Country Bible Church in Austin,
3233 where he served as an elder; and
3334 WHEREAS, Charles Derrick dedicated his life to protecting the
3435 safety of others, and in so doing, he embodied the highest ideals of
3536 the law enforcement profession; now, therefore, be it
3637 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
3738 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Chief Charles Edward
3839 Derrick and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to
3940 his wife of 31 years, Chris Derrick; to his sons, Stephen Derrick
4041 and Jason Derrick and his wife, Kosal; to his grandchildren, Emma,
4142 Payton, Grace, Ethan, and Caleb; to his sister, Melanie Brown, and
4243 her husband, Gary; and to his many other relatives and friends; and,
4344 be it further
4445 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4546 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
4647 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Charles
4748 Edward Derrick.
