5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The citizens of Brady are mourning the loss of |

6 | 7 | | police chief Charles Edward Derrick, who passed away on December |

7 | 8 | | 21, 2014, at the age of 57; and |
---|
8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Charlie Derrick was born in Dallas to Charles and |
---|
9 | 10 | | Mary Derrick on August 25, 1957; he graduated from the Texas |
---|
10 | 11 | | Department of Public Safety Academy in 1980 and was assigned to the |
---|
11 | 12 | | driver's license division in Farmers Branch for one year; this fine |
---|
12 | 13 | | officer then realized a lifelong dream in 1981, when he became a |
---|
13 | 14 | | highway patrol officer; he served in that capacity in Corsicana for |
---|
14 | 15 | | eight years and later worked as a narcotics officer and trainer in |
---|
15 | 16 | | Del Rio, Austin, and San Angelo; and |
---|
16 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Chief Derrick was a member of the DPS Post-Seizure |
---|
17 | 18 | | Analysis Team from 1997 to 2001, and during that time he also |
---|
18 | 19 | | attended the FBI Academy; after returning to narcotics training for |
---|
19 | 20 | | a time, he spent six years as gun range master at the DPS firearms |
---|
20 | 21 | | range in Florence, where he worked with recruits until his |
---|
21 | 22 | | retirement in 2009; and |
---|
22 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Following his exemplary tenure with DPS, Chief |
---|
23 | 24 | | Derrick moved to Brady and assumed the post of chief of police; |
---|
24 | 25 | | during his more than five years in that office, he set an inspiring |
---|
25 | 26 | | example of professionalism and integrity while admirably serving |
---|
26 | 27 | | the citizens of Brady and McCulloch County; and |
---|
27 | 28 | | WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Chief Derrick enjoyed the love |
---|
28 | 29 | | and support of his wife of more than three decades, Chris Derrick, |
---|
29 | 30 | | and he took great pride in their three sons, Jason, Stephen, and |
---|
30 | 31 | | Samuel, as well as their five grandchildren; a man of deep faith, he |
---|
31 | 32 | | was an active congregant of Hill Country Bible Church in Austin, |
---|
32 | 33 | | where he served as an elder; and |
---|
33 | 34 | | WHEREAS, Charles Derrick dedicated his life to protecting the |
---|
34 | 35 | | safety of others, and in so doing, he embodied the highest ideals of |
---|
35 | 36 | | the law enforcement profession; now, therefore, be it |
---|
36 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |
---|
37 | 38 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Chief Charles Edward |

38 | 39 | | Derrick and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to |

39 | 40 | | his wife of 31 years, Chris Derrick; to his sons, Stephen Derrick |

40 | 41 | | and Jason Derrick and his wife, Kosal; to his grandchildren, Emma, |

41 | 42 | | Payton, Grace, Ethan, and Caleb; to his sister, Melanie Brown, and |

42 | 43 | | her husband, Gary; and to his many other relatives and friends; and, |
