5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Kenneth Miller retired as publisher of the Hamilton |

6 | 7 | | Herald-News in September 2014, concluding a long and distinguished |

7 | 8 | | career with this noteworthy publication; and |

8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, In 1965, Mr. Miller's family purchased the |

9 | 10 | | newspaper; his father, Bob, served as editor and publisher, and his |
---|
10 | 11 | | mother, Mavis, was the business and advertising manager; Mr. Miller |
---|
11 | 12 | | was working as a photographer by the time he was in the sixth grade, |

12 | 13 | | and he spent countless hours in the darkroom; in 1982, Mr. Miller |

13 | 14 | | purchased the paper with his brother, Roger, and he went on to |
---|
14 | 15 | | become the sole owner; and |
---|
15 | 16 | | WHEREAS, The Herald-News came to be defined by Mr. Miller's |

16 | 17 | | dedication to informing and engaging his fellow citizens, and its |

17 | 18 | | pages reflected both his love for Hamilton and his fine sense of |

18 | 19 | | humor; moreover, he taught younger members of the staff how to serve |
---|
19 | 20 | | readers with dedication and a commitment to excellence; in 2014, he |
---|
20 | 21 | | was named to the Media Honor Roll by the Hamilton Independent School |

21 | 22 | | District in the Texas Association of School Boards program that |
---|
22 | 23 | | recognizes fair, accurate, and balanced reporting of public school |

23 | 24 | | news; and |

24 | 25 | | WHEREAS, The time having come to sell the newspaper, |

25 | 26 | | Mr. Miller chose to maintain local ownership by entrusting the |

26 | 27 | | publication to the stewardship of a valued employee; although his |

27 | 28 | | retirement marks the end of an era in Hamilton, he established a |
---|
28 | 29 | | strong tradition of community journalism on which others may |
---|
29 | 30 | | continue to build in the years to come; now, therefore, be it |

30 | 31 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |

31 | 32 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Kenneth Miller on his retirement as |

32 | 33 | | publisher of the Hamilton Herald-News and extend to him sincere |

33 | 34 | | best wishes for the future; and, be it further |
