| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, John Hatzel will be retiring as assistant chief of |

| 6 | 7 | | the Universal City Fire Department in December 2016, drawing to a |

| 7 | 8 | | close a notable career as a first responder that has spanned four |

| 8 | 9 | | and half decades; and |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Assistant Chief Hatzel joined the department as a |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | volunteer firefighter in 1970, and he became a full-time |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | professional firefighter two years later; in the decades since, he |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | has been a leader and innovator for the department, becoming one of |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | the first members of the department to earn certification as an |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | emergency medical technician; he also initiated the Knox Box |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | program, which provides firefighters with keys to local businesses |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | in the event of an emergency after hours, and developed a fire |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | prevention program for children that evolved into a stage |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | production with actors, clowns, and special effects; and |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | WHEREAS, This dedicated firefighter has received numerous |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | certifications from the Texas Commission on Fire Protection, |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | including fire service instructor and advanced firefighter, arson |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | investigator, and inspector; he has also been certified as a master |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | police officer by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement; and |

| 24 | 25 | | WHEREAS, John Hatzel's dedication, professionalism, and |

| 25 | 26 | | commitment to protecting the safety and welfare of the public have |

| 26 | 27 | | greatly benefited the citizens of Universal City and earned him the |

| 27 | 28 | | respect and admiration of his fellow firefighters, and he may |

| 28 | 29 | | indeed reflect with pride on a career well spent as he prepares to |
