H.R. No. 144 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, A 50th wedding anniversary marks a lifetime of mutual devotion and shared experiences, and Jim and May Schmidt of Austin celebrated this joyous milestone in their marriage on January 16, 2015; and WHEREAS, The couple met when they were students at The University of Texas at Austin, and they were joined in matrimony in 1965 at a ceremony held at the First Unitarian Universalist Church in Austin; and WHEREAS, Following Mrs. Schmidt's graduation from UT and Mr. Schmidt's graduation from Huston-Tillotson University, they served together with the Peace Corps in El Salvador; after returning to the States, Mrs. Schmidt earned master's degrees in Latin American studies and in library science, while Mr. Schmidt studied nursing at Austin Community College; and WHEREAS, Now retired, Mrs. Schmidt worked as a librarian at the Austin Public Library, and she currently serves as a librarian at the Texas Archeological Research Laboratory; she has contributed to her community as a member of the Texas PTA board and as a former president of the Austin Council of PTAs, and the gymnasium at Pease Elementary School is named in her honor; she is also active with the Travis County Historical Commission; and WHEREAS, Mr. Schmidt enjoyed a career as a registered nurse with the City of Austin and the State of Texas; now retired, he serves as an aide at the French Legation Museum, and he is an active member of the Balcones Forge Central Texas Blacksmiths; he and his wife are both officers in the Texas Archeological Society and members of the Travis County Archeological Society and Texas Archeological Stewardship Network, and they also serve as Travis County elections officials and docents at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center; and WHEREAS, Through the years, Mr. and Mrs. Schmidt have been blessed with a treasured family that includes their children, Erna and her wife, Denise, and Christian and his wife, Kristin, as well as their grandchildren, McKenna, C. J., and John, and great-grandsons, Matthew and Samuel; and WHEREAS, Jim and May Schmidt have enjoyed five decades of abiding love and affection for each other, and they are among an exceptional group of men and women who can claim such a lasting commitment; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Jim and May Schmidt on their golden wedding anniversary and extend to them sincere best wishes for continued happiness; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. and Mrs. Schmidt as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
