6 | 7 | | Austin on March 24, 2015, to celebrate Atascosa County Day at the |

8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, During the first part of the 19th century, the |
---|
9 | 10 | | grassy prairie region of South Texas that would become Atascosa |
---|
10 | 11 | | County attracted Spanish, Mexican, and Anglo-American settlers, |
---|
11 | 12 | | and by the time of the Texas Revolution, its ranching industry was |
---|
12 | 13 | | flourishing; in 1856, the region was sufficiently populated to be |
---|
13 | 14 | | sectioned off from Bexar County; the county seat, originally at |
---|
14 | 15 | | Navatasco, was later moved to Pleasanton, and then in 1910, voters |
---|
15 | 16 | | supported moving it again, this time to the more centrally located |
---|
16 | 17 | | town of Jourdanton; and |
---|
17 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Situated near the famous Camino Real, Atascosa |

18 | 19 | | County has long benefited from its proximity to major |

19 | 20 | | transportation arteries linking it with the Gulf Coast, the Rio |

20 | 21 | | Grande Valley, and Mexico, as well as other major population |
---|
21 | 22 | | centers; the county enjoys the economic benefits reaped by an |

22 | 23 | | abundance of natural resources and, blessed with productive range |
---|
23 | 24 | | and irrigated farmland, the area is known for its agricultural |
---|
24 | 25 | | industries; additionally, other resources such as oil and gas play |
---|
25 | 26 | | a significant role in the economy; and |

26 | 27 | | WHEREAS, Proud of its ranching heritage, Pleasanton, the |

27 | 28 | | county's trading center, bills itself as the birthplace of the |
---|
28 | 29 | | cowboy, a designation symbolized by a large bronze statue in front |
---|
29 | 30 | | of city hall; in nearby Poteet, known to many as the Strawberry |

30 | 31 | | Capital, a Strawberry Festival takes place in April, and a |
---|
31 | 32 | | seven-foot, 1,600-pound monument to the fruit graces the front lawn |

33 | 34 | | WHEREAS, The residents of Atascosa County have made many |

34 | 35 | | notable contributions to the economy and culture of Texas, and they |

35 | 36 | | may take justifiable pride in the place that they call home; now, |

37 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |
