45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, The 4-H Youth Development Program has provided
67 invaluable experience-based training for youth across the Lone Star
78 State for 107 years; and
89 WHEREAS, The Texas 4-H program can trace its roots back to
910 1908, when agricultural agent Tom Marks organized the Jack County
1011 Corn Club, which taught local boys about the latest production
1112 technology; over the following years, there was a rapid expansion
1213 of educational programs directed to rural youth, including
1314 opportunities for girls in Milam County to gain insight on better
1415 cultivation and canning methods for homegrown tomatoes and for
1516 African American youth in Waller County to learn about vegetable
1617 gardening and raising poultry; and
1718 WHEREAS, Today, Texas 4-H claims a membership of more than
1819 65,000, with another 850,000 young Texans participating in 4-H
1920 programs at school or youth centers; members acquire life skills,
2021 develop strong character, and improve their readiness for the
2122 workplace and for college; each program promotes productive use of
2223 the four H's--Head, Heart, Hands, and Health--and supports the
2324 organization's motto, "to make the best better"; moreover,
2425 participants are encouraged to give back to their fellow citizens
2526 through volunteer projects to protect the environment, mentor
2627 younger children, and help the less fortunate; and
2728 WHEREAS, Administered by the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension
2829 Service and the Prairie View A&M Cooperative Extension Program, 4-H
2930 is made possible through the dedicated efforts of numerous
3031 employees and over 56,000 trained volunteers; and
3132 WHEREAS, Throughout its proud history, the 4-H program has
3233 helped develop young Texans into role models by providing
3334 activities that build character and instill strong values, and the
3435 organization is indeed worthy of special legislative recognition;
3536 now, therefore, be it
3637 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
3738 Legislature hereby recognize March 25, 2015, as 4-H Day at the State
3839 Capitol and extend to all those associated with the organization
3940 sincere best wishes for continued success.
