45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Distinguished members and officers of the Texas
67 Mining and Reclamation Association are gathering at the State
78 Capitol on March 26, 2015, to celebrate the association's
89 achievements and to highlight the importance of the mining industry
910 in the Lone Star State; and
1011 WHEREAS, Serving as the voice for the Texas mining industry,
1112 TMRA strives to create an effective balance between mineral
1213 production, environmental protection, economic strength, and
1314 public welfare as it educates the public, regulators, and
1415 policymakers on the value of mining to our state's economy; and
1516 WHEREAS, TMRA provides annual free teacher workshops to
1617 increase teachers' knowledge about earth science and geology and
1718 how to make the best use of our natural resources while protecting
1819 the environment; since 1991, these workshops have provided more
1920 than 1,500 teachers with valuable classroom materials and have
2021 contributed to the education of over one million students in the
2122 state; and
2223 WHEREAS, Texas contains an abundance of raw materials that
2324 improve the quality of our lives: metal ores provide manufacturers
2425 with vital components for production; sand, stone, and gravel,
2526 which can be found in quarries across the state, serve as the
2627 foundation for new construction; and industrial minerals are
2728 important components of a variety of products, from pharmaceuticals
2829 to automobiles; and
2930 WHEREAS, Coal mining and coal-fired electricity generation
3031 are important economic engines in Texas, and these industries spark
3132 additional business activity up and down their supply chains,
3233 thereby creating new jobs and income for Texas residents; Texas
3334 coal is a reliable source of fuel for electric power generation and
3435 contributes to efforts to make the state more energy independent
3536 and a more competitive place to do business; and
3637 WHEREAS, Uranium, another fuel source used for the generation
3738 of electricity, can produce more power than other clean energy
3839 sources; the annual investments and economic activity generated by
3940 the Texas uranium mining industry help boost economic growth and
4041 development, and this economic activity is an especially critical
4142 driver of economic opportunity in many South Texas counties; and
4243 WHEREAS, The mining industry in Texas has a positive economic
4344 impact of more than $13 billion annually, including over 34,000
4445 direct industry jobs and 86,000 indirect employment opportunities,
4546 and this economic impact is largest in small, rural communities
4647 that have few other contributing industries; and
4748 WHEREAS, By providing important information about the mining
4849 industry in Texas and training current and future generations of
4950 business and government leaders, TMRA is making significant
5051 contributions to the prosperity of the state; now, therefore, be it
5152 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
5253 Legislature hereby recognize March 26, 2015, as Texas Mining and
5354 Reclamation Association Day at the Capitol and commend the
5455 association for its notable record of service and for its
5556 outstanding efforts to educate Texas citizens on the value of
5657 mining to our state's economy.
