| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Words cannot adequately express the sorrow felt at |

| 6 | 7 | | the loss of U.S. Marine Staff Sergeant Michael Quinton Calvin, who |

| 7 | 8 | | passed away on January 11, 2015, at the age of 37; and |

| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Born on November 16, 1977, Michael Calvin was the |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | son of Willie and Elvira Calvin and grew up with the companionship |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | of his brother, Christopher; during his years at Thorndale High |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | School, he was a member of the track and basketball teams and helped |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | the Bulldogs become state champions in football; answering his |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | nation's call to duty, this brave Texan joined the Marine Corps in |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | March 1999, beginning a distinguished military career that spanned |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | more than 15 years; and |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Sergeant Calvin served two tours of duty in Iraq, |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | during which time he impressed his superiors with his exceptional |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | work ethic and his determination to complete every task to the best |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | of his ability; he was assigned as a communications chief for an |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | entire tank company and as a battalion communications platoon |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | sergeant, and his exemplary service earned him the Navy and Marine |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | Corps Commendation Medal along with numerous other service honors; |

| 24 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Deeply devoted to his family, Sergeant Calvin |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | cherished the time he spent with his wife, Amanda, and his two |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | daughters, Megan and Maysa, and he loved to talk about them during |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | those times when his duties took him away from home; he was a |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | passionate fan of The University of Texas sports teams, and |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | although he left the Lone Star State to settle in Richlands, North |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | Carolina, he seldom missed a chance to root for the Longhorns on |

| 31 | 32 | | game days; and |

| 32 | 33 | | WHEREAS, While his years on this earth were far too few, |

| 33 | 34 | | Michael Calvin nevertheless achieved a life that was rich in |

| 34 | 35 | | family, friends, and meaningful accomplishments, and his valiant |

| 35 | 36 | | service to his fellow citizens and the joy that he shared with |

| 36 | 37 | | others will never be forgotten; now, therefore, be it |

| 37 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |

| 38 | 39 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Staff Sergeant |
