45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Words cannot adequately express the sorrow felt at
67 the loss of U.S. Marine Staff Sergeant Michael Quinton Calvin, who
78 passed away on January 11, 2015, at the age of 37; and
89 WHEREAS, Born on November 16, 1977, Michael Calvin was the
910 son of Willie and Elvira Calvin and grew up with the companionship
1011 of his brother, Christopher; during his years at Thorndale High
1112 School, he was a member of the track and basketball teams and helped
1213 the Bulldogs become state champions in football; answering his
1314 nation's call to duty, this brave Texan joined the Marine Corps in
1415 March 1999, beginning a distinguished military career that spanned
1516 more than 15 years; and
1617 WHEREAS, Sergeant Calvin served two tours of duty in Iraq,
1718 during which time he impressed his superiors with his exceptional
1819 work ethic and his determination to complete every task to the best
1920 of his ability; he was assigned as a communications chief for an
2021 entire tank company and as a battalion communications platoon
2122 sergeant, and his exemplary service earned him the Navy and Marine
2223 Corps Commendation Medal along with numerous other service honors;
2324 and
2425 WHEREAS, Deeply devoted to his family, Sergeant Calvin
2526 cherished the time he spent with his wife, Amanda, and his two
2627 daughters, Megan and Maysa, and he loved to talk about them during
2728 those times when his duties took him away from home; he was a
2829 passionate fan of The University of Texas sports teams, and
2930 although he left the Lone Star State to settle in Richlands, North
3031 Carolina, he seldom missed a chance to root for the Longhorns on
3132 game days; and
3233 WHEREAS, While his years on this earth were far too few,
3334 Michael Calvin nevertheless achieved a life that was rich in
3435 family, friends, and meaningful accomplishments, and his valiant
3536 service to his fellow citizens and the joy that he shared with
3637 others will never be forgotten; now, therefore, be it
3738 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
3839 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Staff Sergeant
3940 Michael Quinton Calvin and extend heartfelt condolences to the
4041 members of his family: to his wife, Amanda Calvin; to his daughters,
4142 Megan and Maysa Calvin; to his parents, Willie and Elvira Calvin; to
4243 his brother, Christopher Calvin; and to his other relatives and
4344 many friends; and, be it further
4445 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4546 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
4647 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Sergeant
4748 Calvin.
