| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Officer James Vernier of The University of Texas at |

| 7 | 8 | | composure when he rendered critical, life-saving assistance during |

| 8 | 9 | | a sporting event on the campus of UTA on January 10, 2015; and |

| 9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, During a men's basketball game at College Park |

| 10 | 11 | | Center that evening, one of the game's officials began to |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | experience chest pains and shortness of breath; he then collapsed, |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | lost consciousness, and stopped breathing; and |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Recognizing the symptoms of cardiac arrest, Officer |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | Vernier immediately began performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | on the individual in need; thanks to the officer's skillful |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | attention, the referee began to breathe again and regained |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | consciousness; and |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Officer Vernier continued to attend to the victim |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | until the arrival of emergency medical technicians, who took the |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | man to an Arlington hospital, where he was treated for a heart |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | attack; and |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | WHEREAS, A UTA police officer for four years, Officer Vernier |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | has also served with the Texas Air National Guard, and he is |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | completing a master's degree in criminology and political science; |

| 25 | 26 | | and |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | WHEREAS, Every day, the peace officers of Texas come to the |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | aid of individuals in desperate situations, and in providing vital |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | aid in an emergency, Officer James Vernier has exemplified the |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | highest ideals of his profession; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |
|---|
| 31 | 32 | | Legislature commend Officer James Vernier for saving a man's life |
|---|
| 32 | 33 | | and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued success and |
