| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Karen Monk of Sour Lake showed remarkable bravery |

| 7 | 8 | | enforcement officials in Galveston to apprehend a notorious |

| 8 | 9 | | kidnapping and murder suspect; and |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Early on the morning of September 13, 2014, an |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | 18-year-old woman at the University of Virginia went missing in |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | Charlottesville; according to witnesses and video surveillance |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | footage, she was last seen with a former hospital worker; after |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | being questioned by police, he disappeared and became the subject |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | of a nationwide manhunt, charged with abduction; and |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | WHEREAS, On September 24, Karen Monk, a single mother and |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | college student from Sour Lake, Texas, decided to take a break from |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | her studies and relax on the beach on the Bolivar Peninsula in |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | Galveston County; there, she saw a man camping on the beach whom she |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | recognized from news reports as the suspect in the student's |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | disappearance; and |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Acting without hesitation, Ms. Monk called the |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | Galveston County Sheriff's Office and waited for the arrival of a |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | deputy, who arrested the man; the suspect was extradited to |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | Virginia, where in the time since his arrest, the victim's body was |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | discovered, and the suspect was indicted in her abduction and |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | murder; and |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | WHEREAS, By quickly alerting the authorities, Ms. Monk |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | helped the police bring a potentially dangerous suspect to justice, |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | and she may indeed take great pride in her achievement; now, |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | therefore, be it |

| 31 | 32 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |

| 32 | 33 | | Legislature hereby commend Karen Monk for her critical assistance |
|---|
| 33 | 34 | | in the capture of a fugitive and extend to her sincere best wishes |
