5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Thomas Kreneck received a Premio Estrella de |

7 | 8 | | Chicana and Chicano Studies, Tejas Foco, at the group's annual |

8 | 9 | | conference in February 2015, in recognition of outstanding work |

9 | 10 | | that has spanned more than a quarter-century; and |
---|
10 | 11 | | WHEREAS, Formed in 1972, the NACCS serves academic programs, |
---|
11 | 12 | | departments, and research centers that focus on issues of |
---|
12 | 13 | | importance to Mexican Americans, Chicanos, and Latinos; each year |
---|
13 | 14 | | at the Tejas Foco Conference, the organization presents literary |
---|
14 | 15 | | awards to deserving individuals across a variety of categories, |
---|
15 | 16 | | including cultural arts, social justice and services, political |
---|
16 | 17 | | engagement, and publications; Dr. Kreneck has been involved with |
---|
17 | 18 | | the NACCS since the late 1970s; and |
---|
18 | 19 | | WHEREAS, During a tenure of more than a decade at the Houston |
---|
19 | 20 | | Metropolitan Research Center, Dr. Kreneck originated and built the |
---|
20 | 21 | | center's Mexican American archival component; he joined Texas A&M |
---|
21 | 22 | | University--Corpus Christi in 1990 to curate the papers of |
---|
22 | 23 | | Dr. Hector P. Garcia, founder of the American GI Forum, and as Bell |
---|
23 | 24 | | Library associate director for Special Collections and Archives, he |
---|
24 | 25 | | greatly expanded the number of books and manuscripts assembled in |
---|
25 | 26 | | his department; he also served the university as Joe B. Frantz |
---|
26 | 27 | | Lecturer in Public History before his retirement in 2012; and |
---|
27 | 28 | | WHEREAS, In addition to his work in academia, Dr. Kreneck is |

28 | 29 | | the author of two books, Mexican American Odyssey: Felix Tijerina, |
---|
29 | 30 | | Entrepreneur and Civic Leader, 1905-1965, and Del Pueblo: A History |
---|
30 | 31 | | of Houston's Hispanic Community; he has published a number of |

31 | 32 | | scholarly articles, as well, and edited other works focused on |
---|
32 | 33 | | Mexican American and Texas history; Dr. Kreneck is a charter member |
---|
33 | 34 | | of the Academy of Certified Archivists and a Fellow of the Texas |
---|
34 | 35 | | State Historical Association; and |
---|
35 | 36 | | WHEREAS, Throughout his career, Dr. Thomas Kreneck has |

36 | 37 | | significantly added to the knowledge of Chicano history and culture |

37 | 38 | | in Texas, and he has earned the respect and admiration of colleagues |

38 | 39 | | and fellow citizens alike; now, therefore, be it |

39 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |

40 | 41 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Dr. Thomas Kreneck on receiving a |

41 | 42 | | Premio Estrella de Aztlán Lifetime Achievement Award and extend to |

42 | 43 | | him sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further |

43 | 44 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
