45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, The winning of World War II required the dedication
67 and sacrifice of millions of Americans and their families, and the
78 demands of that titanic struggle fell especially heavily on the
89 Trevino family of Zapata, who sent six brothers into harm's way; and
910 WHEREAS, Descendants of land-grant owners in Zapata County,
1011 Filiberto and Luisa Cuellar Trevino were the parents of six sons and
1112 four daughters, and over the course of World War II, all six
1213 brothers served honorably in the U.S. Army, in locations around the
1314 world and in several different theaters of combat; and
1415 WHEREAS, The family's oldest son, Teodoro, joined the army in
1516 June 1941, before the attack on Pearl Harbor; a medic in the Medical
1617 Corps for four and a half years, he served first in Arkansas and
1718 later in India; Antonio Trevino enlisted in the army three days
1819 after Pearl Harbor and served for four years with the Coast
1920 Artillery Corps; sent to England after various postings stateside,
2021 he subsequently led an antiaircraft crew in France in the months
2122 after D-Day; and
2223 WHEREAS, Anselmo Trevino, Filiberto Trevino Jr., and their
2324 maternal uncle Manuel Cuellar were all sworn into the army on
2425 November 10, 1942, and reported to Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio;
2526 Anselmo Trevino served in Arkansas for five and a half months before
2627 receiving an honorable discharge for a leg injury; Filiberto
2728 Trevino served in England for 25 months as a member of the 1924th
2829 Ordnance Ammunition Company of the U.S. Army Air Corps, loading and
2930 unloading bombs and small arms from trucks; and
3031 WHEREAS, Leopoldo Trevino joined the army in June 1943 and
3132 served with the 586th Antiaircraft Battalion; after reporting to
3233 Fort Bliss in El Paso and training at Fort Bowie in Arizona, he was
3334 sent via Seattle to Oahu, Hawaii; in 1944, he took part in the
3435 invasion of Okinawa, where he and his battalion survived a typhoon
3536 by taking shelter in their tents and in caves formerly occupied by
3637 the Japanese army; and
3738 WHEREAS, The family's youngest son, Jose Manuel Trevino, was
3839 inducted at Fort Sam Houston in May 1944; the following December he
3940 shipped out to Germany, where he served with a machine-gun squad and
4041 sustained injuries from both a road accident and enemy fire; and
4142 WHEREAS, During the war, the Trevino brothers were often
4243 unable to contact their family for months at a time; their father
4344 spent many evenings in a local barber shop, listening for news of
4445 his sons' units on the radio, while Mrs. Trevino and her three
4546 surviving daughters, Adelina, Maria Concepcion, and Luisa, prayed
4647 at home for their safe return; and
4748 WHEREAS, By June 1946, the Trevino brothers had all been
4849 honorably discharged and had returned to their loving family;
4950 today, 70 years after the end of the war, five of the brothers have
5051 passed away, but Leopoldo Trevino remains to honor their memory and
5152 to pass the story of their heroism down to younger generations, who
5253 have benefited from their sacrifice; and
5354 WHEREAS, These esteemed Texans exemplified the best values of
5455 a generation that helped to preserve democracy and liberty during
5556 the most far-reaching conflict in world history, and their fellow
5657 citizens owe them a profound and lasting debt of gratitude; now,
5758 therefore, be it
5859 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
5960 Legislature hereby honor Leopoldo Trevino and pay tribute to the
6061 memory of Teodoro Trevino, Antonio Trevino, Jose Manuel Trevino,
6162 Filiberto Trevino Jr., and Anselmo Trevino for their courageous
6263 service to this nation during World War II; and, be it further
6364 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
6465 prepared for the Trevino family as an expression of high regard by
6566 the Texas House of Representatives.
