5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The winning of World War II required the dedication |

6 | 7 | | and sacrifice of millions of Americans and their families, and the |

7 | 8 | | demands of that titanic struggle fell especially heavily on the |

8 | 9 | | Trevino family of Zapata, who sent six brothers into harm's way; and |
---|
9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Descendants of land-grant owners in Zapata County, |
---|
10 | 11 | | Filiberto and Luisa Cuellar Trevino were the parents of six sons and |
---|
11 | 12 | | four daughters, and over the course of World War II, all six |
---|
12 | 13 | | brothers served honorably in the U.S. Army, in locations around the |
---|
13 | 14 | | world and in several different theaters of combat; and |
---|
14 | 15 | | WHEREAS, The family's oldest son, Teodoro, joined the army in |
---|
15 | 16 | | June 1941, before the attack on Pearl Harbor; a medic in the Medical |
---|
16 | 17 | | Corps for four and a half years, he served first in Arkansas and |
---|
17 | 18 | | later in India; Antonio Trevino enlisted in the army three days |
---|
18 | 19 | | after Pearl Harbor and served for four years with the Coast |
---|
19 | 20 | | Artillery Corps; sent to England after various postings stateside, |
---|
20 | 21 | | he subsequently led an antiaircraft crew in France in the months |
---|
21 | 22 | | after D-Day; and |

22 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Anselmo Trevino, Filiberto Trevino Jr., and their |

23 | 24 | | maternal uncle Manuel Cuellar were all sworn into the army on |
---|
24 | 25 | | November 10, 1942, and reported to Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio; |
---|
25 | 26 | | Anselmo Trevino served in Arkansas for five and a half months before |
---|
26 | 27 | | receiving an honorable discharge for a leg injury; Filiberto |
---|
27 | 28 | | Trevino served in England for 25 months as a member of the 1924th |
---|
28 | 29 | | Ordnance Ammunition Company of the U.S. Army Air Corps, loading and |
---|
29 | 30 | | unloading bombs and small arms from trucks; and |
---|
30 | 31 | | WHEREAS, Leopoldo Trevino joined the army in June 1943 and |
---|
31 | 32 | | served with the 586th Antiaircraft Battalion; after reporting to |
---|
32 | 33 | | Fort Bliss in El Paso and training at Fort Bowie in Arizona, he was |
---|
33 | 34 | | sent via Seattle to Oahu, Hawaii; in 1944, he took part in the |
---|
34 | 35 | | invasion of Okinawa, where he and his battalion survived a typhoon |
---|
35 | 36 | | by taking shelter in their tents and in caves formerly occupied by |
---|
36 | 37 | | the Japanese army; and |
---|
37 | 38 | | WHEREAS, The family's youngest son, Jose Manuel Trevino, was |
---|
38 | 39 | | inducted at Fort Sam Houston in May 1944; the following December he |
---|
39 | 40 | | shipped out to Germany, where he served with a machine-gun squad and |
---|
40 | 41 | | sustained injuries from both a road accident and enemy fire; and |
---|
41 | 42 | | WHEREAS, During the war, the Trevino brothers were often |
---|
42 | 43 | | unable to contact their family for months at a time; their father |
---|
43 | 44 | | spent many evenings in a local barber shop, listening for news of |
---|
44 | 45 | | his sons' units on the radio, while Mrs. Trevino and her three |
---|
45 | 46 | | surviving daughters, Adelina, Maria Concepcion, and Luisa, prayed |
---|
46 | 47 | | at home for their safe return; and |
---|
47 | 48 | | WHEREAS, By June 1946, the Trevino brothers had all been |
---|
48 | 49 | | honorably discharged and had returned to their loving family; |
---|
49 | 50 | | today, 70 years after the end of the war, five of the brothers have |
---|
50 | 51 | | passed away, but Leopoldo Trevino remains to honor their memory and |
---|
51 | 52 | | to pass the story of their heroism down to younger generations, who |
---|
52 | 53 | | have benefited from their sacrifice; and |
---|
53 | 54 | | WHEREAS, These esteemed Texans exemplified the best values of |
---|
54 | 55 | | a generation that helped to preserve democracy and liberty during |
---|
55 | 56 | | the most far-reaching conflict in world history, and their fellow |
---|
56 | 57 | | citizens owe them a profound and lasting debt of gratitude; now, |
---|
57 | 58 | | therefore, be it |

58 | 59 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |
---|
59 | 60 | | Legislature hereby honor Leopoldo Trevino and pay tribute to the |
---|
60 | 61 | | memory of Teodoro Trevino, Antonio Trevino, Jose Manuel Trevino, |
---|
61 | 62 | | Filiberto Trevino Jr., and Anselmo Trevino for their courageous |
---|
62 | 63 | | service to this nation during World War II; and, be it further |

63 | 64 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
