45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, A rich and purposeful life drew to a close with the
67 passing of Amelia Ramirez Canales on February 27, 2015, at the age
78 of 89; and
89 WHEREAS, Descended from one of the founding families of
910 Hebbronville, the former Amelia Ramirez was born there on October
1011 4, 1925, to Amelia Barrera-Guerra and Rafael Ramirez; as a
1112 teenager, she was the head cheerleader at Hebbronville High School
1213 and the salutatorian of her graduating class; and
1314 WHEREAS, She continued her education at Incarnate Word
1415 College in San Antonio, where she became a Phi Beta Kappa member,
1516 and it was during this time that she met Gregorio M. Canales; the
1617 pair soon married and ultimately settled in San Antonio and became
1718 the proud parents of seven children, Gregorio, Maria, Francine,
1819 Amelia, Luis, Mapi, and Cristina; and
1920 WHEREAS, Mrs. Canales enjoyed volunteering her time and
2021 talents to benefit such organizations as the San Antonio Women's
2122 Pavilion at HemisFair Park and the Mexican American Cultural
2223 Center; inspired by the diverse lands, customs, and people of South
2324 Texas, she wrote bilingual poetry that became part of the San
2425 Antonio ISD and Edgewood ISD language and literature programs, and
2526 she was a founding member of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de
2627 México extension program in San Antonio; she was also involved with
2728 the Light One Candle Education and Endowment Funds, which were set
2829 up in memory of her late husband in 1993; and
2930 WHEREAS, Those fortunate enough to have known Amelia Canales
3031 will remember her light and laughter, and the way she touched their
3132 lives with her kindness and generosity, and she will forever hold a
3233 treasured place in their hearts; now, therefore, be it
3334 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
3435 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Amelia Ramirez
3536 Canales and extend sincere sympathy to the members of her family: to
3637 her children, Francine Garza-Vale and her husband, Dr. Arnulfo
3738 Garza-Vale, Amelia Rosario Sondgeroth and her husband, Jim, Luis
3839 Felipe Canales and his wife, Hillary, Maria del Pilar "Mapi" Helm,
3940 and Cristina Maria Canales; to her daughter-in-law, Josie Canales;
4041 to her grandchildren, Nicole Zoli and her husband, Guido, Andrea
4142 Teresa Maaseide and her husband, Steve, Anthony Garza-Vale,
4243 Francisco Sondgeroth and his wife, Jordan, Erica Sondgeroth,
4344 Angelica Fruin and her husband, Scott, Sonya Gil and her husband,
4445 Aaron, Monica Canales, Rebecca and Alex Helm, and Katie Canales; to
4546 her great-grandchildren, Michael, Ellie, and Mia Maaseide, Alessio
4647 and Giacomo Zoli, Malik Canales-Turner, Magnum and Amelia Mandalay
4748 Fruin, Amado Canales-Salazar, Antonio Canales, Mythius and Harmony
4849 Lopez, and Joseph and Jacob Sondgeroth; and to her other relatives
4950 and friends; and, be it further
5051 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5152 prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of
5253 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Amelia
5354 Ramirez Canales.
