45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Myasthenia Gravis Awareness Month is being observed
67 in June 2015; and
78 WHEREAS, Rare and often misdiagnosed, myasthenia gravis is an
89 autoimmune, neuromuscular disease that causes weakness in the
910 voluntary muscle groups; MG can affect anyone, no matter their
1011 race, gender, or age, and although it is controllable by medication
1112 and other treatments, it can be fatal; and
1213 WHEREAS, The Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America is a
1314 nonprofit organization formed in 1952; it has a network of chapters
1415 throughout the country whose mission is to facilitate the timely
1516 diagnosis and optimal care of individuals affected by this disease;
1617 the MGFA also works to improve lives through programs of public
1718 information, medical research, professional education, advocacy,
1819 and patient services and care; and
1920 WHEREAS, Approximately 70,000 Americans are living with MG,
2021 and Myasthenia Gravis Awareness Month offers a time to learn more
2122 about this disease and to focus on the need for further education,
2223 treatment, and research in the hope of ultimately finding a cure;
2324 now, therefore, be it
2425 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
2526 Legislature hereby recognize June 2015 as Myasthenia Gravis
2627 Awareness Month and encourage all Texans to get involved in the
2728 effort to call attention to this serious issue.
