45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Officer Roy Newton Smith of the Corpus Christi
67 Police Department lost his life in the line of duty on April 20,
78 1953, and his service and sacrifice will not soon be forgotten; and
89 WHEREAS, A 21-year-old who had recently been sworn in as an
910 officer, Roy Smith was responding to a call when he was involved in
1011 a tragic vehicle collision; he was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean
1112 War, and at the time of his death, he was survived by his wife,
1213 Laverne, and his daughter, Gail; and
1314 WHEREAS, Our state and nation benefit immeasurably from the
1415 courage and commitment of law enforcement professionals such as
1516 Officer Smith, who willingly place themselves in harm's way each
1617 day to safeguard the lives and property of their fellow citizens;
1718 now, therefore, be it
1819 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
1920 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life and exemplary service of
2021 Officer Roy Newton Smith of the Corpus Christi Police Department.
