45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Officer Luther B. Prather of the Corpus Christi
67 Police Department lost his life in the line of duty on September 14,
78 1919, and his service and sacrifice will not soon be forgotten; and
89 WHEREAS, Born in 1886, Officer Prather joined the department
910 in 1914; during the hurricane of 1919, he heroically crossed the
1011 Rincon Channel several times in order to bring citizens to safety at
1112 the Nueces County Courthouse, even harboring several storm victims
1213 at his own home; while crossing the channel one last time in order
1314 to save a child and several adults, he and the other passengers in
1415 his boat were swept into the rising water and lost; and
1516 WHEREAS, Our state and nation benefit immeasurably from the
1617 courage and commitment of law enforcement professionals such as
1718 Officer Prather, who willingly place themselves in harm's way each
1819 day to safeguard the lives and property of their fellow citizens;
1920 now, therefore, be it
2021 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
2122 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life and exemplary service of
2223 Officer Luther B. Prather of the Corpus Christi Police Department.
