| 9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, The descendent of a founder of Corpus Christi, Elias |

| 10 | 11 | | Mussett was elected twice as city marshal, and shortly after his |

| 11 | 12 | | reelection in 1892, he rode with his daughter, Lillian, at the front |

| 12 | 13 | | of the city's annual Cinco de Mayo parade; as the festivities were |

| 13 | 14 | | winding down early the following morning, he was making one last |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | patrol when he was shot by another police officer, who had |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | threatened to kill the marshal during the recent election; and |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | WHEREAS, The first Corpus Christi officer to be killed in the |

| 17 | 18 | | line of duty, Marshal Mussett was buried in his family's plot in |

| 18 | 19 | | Rose Hill Cemetery, and the entire city shut down and came out for |

| 19 | 20 | | his funeral; and |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Our state and nation benefit immeasurably from the |

| 21 | 22 | | courage and commitment of law enforcement professionals such as |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | Elias Mussett, who willingly place themselves in harm's way each |

| 23 | 24 | | day to safeguard the lives and property of their fellow citizens; |

| 25 | 26 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |
