6 | 7 | | the passing of Maria del Carmen Zendejas Barrera on February 22, |

8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Born in Cementville on August 17, 1924, Carmen |

9 | 10 | | Zendejas was the eldest daughter of Ana Barocio and Jose Erasmo |

10 | 11 | | Zendejas; she graduated from San Antonio Tech High School in 1943 |
---|
11 | 12 | | and went on to attend San Antonio College, St. Mary's University, |
---|
12 | 13 | | and The University of Texas at San Antonio before leaving school to |
---|
13 | 14 | | care for her mother; and |
---|
14 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Throughout her life, Mrs. Barrera devoted much of |
---|
15 | 16 | | her time and energy to such charitable groups as the Pan American |
---|
16 | 17 | | League and the Wolf Trail Kids Kamp, which she served as president |
---|
17 | 18 | | and executive director; among the many other organizations and |
---|
18 | 19 | | initiatives to benefit from her efforts were the San Antonio Bar |
---|
19 | 20 | | Auxiliary, the annual Telethon Navideno, local dental and vision |
---|
20 | 21 | | clinics, and several parent-teacher associations; in 2008, San |
---|
21 | 22 | | Antonio Can High School recognized her contributions to the |
---|
22 | 23 | | community at its San Antonio Motherhood: Lifetime Achievement Award |

23 | 24 | | Luncheon; and |

24 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Mrs. Barrera married her high school sweetheart, |

25 | 26 | | Roy Barrera, in September 1948, and the couple enjoyed a richly |
---|
26 | 27 | | rewarding union over the course of the next 66 years; she was the |
---|
27 | 28 | | devoted mother of five children, Yolanda, Roy, Gilbert, Carmen |

28 | 29 | | Alice, and Bobby, and she cherished the time she spent with her 12 |

29 | 30 | | grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren; her life was further |

30 | 31 | | enriched by her travels to Europe, Asia, Africa, South America, and |

31 | 32 | | Antarctica and by her many lasting friendships maintained through |

33 | 34 | | WHEREAS, A kind and generous woman, Carmen Barrera left an |
