45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, The city of San Antonio lost a beloved resident with
67 the passing of Maria del Carmen Zendejas Barrera on February 22,
78 2015, at the age of 90; and
89 WHEREAS, Born in Cementville on August 17, 1924, Carmen
910 Zendejas was the eldest daughter of Ana Barocio and Jose Erasmo
1011 Zendejas; she graduated from San Antonio Tech High School in 1943
1112 and went on to attend San Antonio College, St. Mary's University,
1213 and The University of Texas at San Antonio before leaving school to
1314 care for her mother; and
1415 WHEREAS, Throughout her life, Mrs. Barrera devoted much of
1516 her time and energy to such charitable groups as the Pan American
1617 League and the Wolf Trail Kids Kamp, which she served as president
1718 and executive director; among the many other organizations and
1819 initiatives to benefit from her efforts were the San Antonio Bar
1920 Auxiliary, the annual Telethon Navideno, local dental and vision
2021 clinics, and several parent-teacher associations; in 2008, San
2122 Antonio Can High School recognized her contributions to the
2223 community at its San Antonio Motherhood: Lifetime Achievement Award
2324 Luncheon; and
2425 WHEREAS, Mrs. Barrera married her high school sweetheart,
2526 Roy Barrera, in September 1948, and the couple enjoyed a richly
2627 rewarding union over the course of the next 66 years; she was the
2728 devoted mother of five children, Yolanda, Roy, Gilbert, Carmen
2829 Alice, and Bobby, and she cherished the time she spent with her 12
2930 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren; her life was further
3031 enriched by her travels to Europe, Asia, Africa, South America, and
3132 Antarctica and by her many lasting friendships maintained through
3233 the Club Capri and Ladies 12 social groups; and
3334 WHEREAS, A kind and generous woman, Carmen Barrera left an
3435 indelible impression on all who were blessed to know her, and those
3536 who shared in the warmth of her affection will forever hold her
3637 close in their hearts; now, therefore, be it
3738 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
3839 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Maria del Carmen
3940 Zendejas Barrera and extend sincere sympathy to the members of her
4041 family: to her husband, Roy Barrera Sr.; to her children, Yolanda
4142 Arellano, Roy Barrera Jr. and his wife, Sally, Gilbert Barrera,
4243 Carmen Alice Ramirez and her husband, Rick, and Bobby Barrera and
4344 his wife, Karen; to her grandchildren, Roy R. Barrera III and his
4445 wife, Jamie, Mark Barrera and his wife, Abril, Marissa Ann Morales
4546 and her husband, Lawrence, Monica Ramirez Khirallah and her
4647 husband, David, Andrea, Robert, and Ana Benita Arellano, Margo,
4748 Maricarmen, and Mia Ramirez, and Olivia and Erik Barrera; to her
4849 great-grandchildren, Roy R. Barrera IV, Ava Rose, Blake, Emma, and
4950 Elena Barrera, Sofia, Lyla, and Felicia Morales, and David
5051 Khirallah Jr.; and to her other relatives and friends; and, be it
5152 further
5253 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5354 prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of
5455 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Maria del
5556 Carmen Zendejas Barrera.
