5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The University of Texas at Arlington is marking its |

6 | 7 | | 120th anniversary in 2015; and |

7 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Founded in 1895 as Arlington College, the school |
---|
8 | 9 | | initially provided instruction to approximately 75 students from |
---|
9 | 10 | | the elementary grades through a level roughly equivalent to high |
---|
10 | 11 | | school; it was converted into Carlisle Military Academy in 1902 and |
---|
11 | 12 | | was subsequently known as Arlington Training School and then |
---|
12 | 13 | | Arlington Military Academy; and |
---|
13 | 14 | | WHEREAS, The institution transitioned into Grubbs Vocational |
---|
14 | 15 | | College, a branch of the Agricultural and Mechanical College of |
---|
15 | 16 | | Texas, in 1917; it maintained that affiliation with what is now |
---|
16 | 17 | | Texas A&M University after changing its name to North Texas |
---|
17 | 18 | | Agricultural College; by 1949, it was considered the largest |
---|
18 | 19 | | state-supported junior college in the Southwest, and it was renamed |
---|
19 | 20 | | Arlington State College; and |
---|
20 | 21 | | WHEREAS, In 1959, Arlington State became a comprehensive |
---|
21 | 22 | | four-year institution, and six years later, it joined The |
---|
22 | 23 | | University of Texas System; the state legislature conferred its |
---|
23 | 24 | | present-day name in 1967; and |
---|
24 | 25 | | WHEREAS, The university today is the second-largest in the UT |
---|
25 | 26 | | System, with nearly 49,000 students, and it is ranked by the |

26 | 27 | | Chronicle of Higher Education as one of the nation's |
---|
27 | 28 | | fastest-growing public research universities; its faculty is |
---|
28 | 29 | | especially noted for specialized expertise in national defense, |
---|
29 | 30 | | information technologies, energy, bioengineering, and |
---|
30 | 31 | | biotechnologies; in addition, it awards nearly 10,000 degrees each |
---|
31 | 32 | | year in critical workforce fields such as engineering and science, |
---|
32 | 33 | | education, social work, and nursing; its nursing college is the |
---|
33 | 34 | | state's top producer of baccalaureates in the field and is one of |
---|
34 | 35 | | the largest such programs in the nation; and |

35 | 36 | | WHEREAS, Committed to broadening access to higher education, |

36 | 37 | | UTA is ranked fifth among national universities for undergraduate |

37 | 38 | | diversity by U.S. News & World Report; its enrollment is about 27 |
---|
38 | 39 | | percent Hispanic and 15 percent African American, and students hail |
---|
39 | 40 | | from over 100 countries; UTA graduates contribute significantly to |
---|
40 | 41 | | the vibrancy of the region, with more than 60 percent settling in |
---|
41 | 42 | | North Texas, and alumni hold leadership positions in all 18 of the |
---|
42 | 43 | | area's Fortune 500 companies; and |
---|
43 | 44 | | WHEREAS, Over the course of 120 years, The University of |
---|
44 | 45 | | Texas at Arlington has provided its students with a strong |
---|
45 | 46 | | foundation for achievement, and in so doing, it has played a |
---|
46 | 47 | | significant role in fostering economic development and enhancing |
---|
47 | 48 | | the quality of life in the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it |
---|
48 | 49 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |
---|
49 | 50 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the 120th anniversary of The |
---|
50 | 51 | | University of Texas at Arlington and extend to the institution's |
---|
51 | 52 | | administration, faculty, staff, and students sincere best wishes |
---|
52 | 53 | | for continued success; and, be it further |
---|
53 | 54 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |

54 | 55 | | prepared for the university as an expression of high regard by the |

55 | 56 | | Texas House of Representatives. |
