45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Woodlawn Academy, in the San Antonio Independent
67 School District, is celebrating its transition to an academy and
78 the completion of its recent renovations with an open house on April
89 7, 2015; and
910 WHEREAS, This outstanding school opened as Woodlawn
1011 Elementary in 1924, and it moved to its present location in 1930; a
1112 new wing was built in the 1990s to accommodate a growing population,
1213 and in the early 2000s a library and a music room were added; and
1314 WHEREAS, Beginning with the 2014-2015 school year, the school
1415 is transitioning from a prekindergarten through fifth grade
1516 elementary school to a prekindergarten through eighth grade math
1617 and science academy; the new academy features smaller classes for
1718 students, allows more siblings of different ages to attend school
1819 together, and enables students and teachers to spend more years
1920 together; extracurricular activities include a robotics club, a
2021 student-created yearbook, a choir, and a spirit team, as well as a
2122 percussion club and a running club; and
2223 WHEREAS, Thanks to an investment of $11.9 million by the
2324 district, this transition includes extensive renovations to the
2425 Woodlawn campus, which now boasts new construction ranging from
2526 science and art labs to a band hall, cafetorium and kitchen, and
2627 courtyard and playgrounds; although extensive in scope, the
2728 renovations were designed and executed to preserve the historical
2829 character of the school building; and
2930 WHEREAS, Preparing for the future as it preserves the best of
3031 the past, Woodlawn Academy is continuing its 90-year tradition of
3132 providing its students with the excellent education they need to
3233 become productive and engaged citizens; now, therefore, be it
3334 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
3435 Legislature hereby commemorate the Woodlawn Academy open house and
3536 extend to the academy's students, teachers, and parents sincere
3637 best wishes for a meaningful and memorable event; and, be it further
3738 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3839 prepared for Woodlawn Academy as an expression of high regard by the
3940 Texas House of Representatives.
