45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Dr. Josiah Heyman has been appointed director of The
67 University of Texas at El Paso Center for Inter-American and Border
78 Studies; and
89 WHEREAS, An anthropologist, Joe Heyman is the university's
910 endowed professor for border trade issues; he served as chair of the
1011 Department of Sociology and Anthropology from 2002 until September
1112 2014, when he assumed his new responsibilities as director of CIBS;
1213 and
1314 WHEREAS, Dr. Heyman has brought to his position a wealth of
1415 scholarly and administrative experience, as well as an
1516 interdisciplinary expertise that will advance the effort to
1617 increase involvement in the center by faculty from multiple
1718 colleges; moreover, his background in activism aligns with the goal
1819 of developing not only a world-class academic and research unit,
1920 but also an organization that engages the community and heightens
2021 awareness concerning such matters as immigration, security, and
2122 human rights; and
2223 WHEREAS, The author of more than 130 articles, book chapters,
2324 and essays, Dr. Heyman has lived in and researched communities on
2425 either side of the United States-Mexico border; he serves on the
2526 board of the international Society for Applied Anthropology, and he
2627 has taken part in numerous community initiatives and rallies
2728 related to public policies and human rights, including Occupy El
2829 Paso; and
2930 WHEREAS, This distinguished scholar completed his doctorate
3031 in anthropology at City University of New York, where he studied
3132 with noted anthropologist Eric R. Wolf; his many accolades include
3233 the prestigious Curl Essay Prize of the Anthropological Institute
3334 of Great Britain and Ireland; and
3435 WHEREAS, Over the course of an exemplary career, Joe Heyman
3536 has demonstrated a true passion for border and Latin American
3637 issues, and with his depth of knowledge and singular combination of
3738 talents, he is eminently qualified to enhance the reputation and
3839 effectiveness of the Center for Inter-American and Border Studies;
3940 now, therefore, be it
4041 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
4142 Legislature hereby congratulate Josiah Heyman on his appointment as
4243 director of The University of Texas at El Paso Center for
4344 Inter-American and Border Studies and extend to him sincere best
4445 wishes for continued success; and, be it further
4546 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4647 prepared for Dr. Heyman as an expression of high regard by the Texas
4748 House of Representatives.
