5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Josiah Heyman has been appointed director of The |

6 | 7 | | University of Texas at El Paso Center for Inter-American and Border |

7 | 8 | | Studies; and |
---|
8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, An anthropologist, Joe Heyman is the university's |
---|
9 | 10 | | endowed professor for border trade issues; he served as chair of the |
---|
10 | 11 | | Department of Sociology and Anthropology from 2002 until September |
---|
11 | 12 | | 2014, when he assumed his new responsibilities as director of CIBS; |
---|
12 | 13 | | and |
---|
13 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Heyman has brought to his position a wealth of |
---|
14 | 15 | | scholarly and administrative experience, as well as an |
---|
15 | 16 | | interdisciplinary expertise that will advance the effort to |
---|
16 | 17 | | increase involvement in the center by faculty from multiple |
---|
17 | 18 | | colleges; moreover, his background in activism aligns with the goal |
---|
18 | 19 | | of developing not only a world-class academic and research unit, |
---|
19 | 20 | | but also an organization that engages the community and heightens |
---|
20 | 21 | | awareness concerning such matters as immigration, security, and |
---|
21 | 22 | | human rights; and |
---|
22 | 23 | | WHEREAS, The author of more than 130 articles, book chapters, |
---|
23 | 24 | | and essays, Dr. Heyman has lived in and researched communities on |
---|
24 | 25 | | either side of the United States-Mexico border; he serves on the |
---|
25 | 26 | | board of the international Society for Applied Anthropology, and he |
---|
26 | 27 | | has taken part in numerous community initiatives and rallies |
---|
27 | 28 | | related to public policies and human rights, including Occupy El |
---|
28 | 29 | | Paso; and |
---|
29 | 30 | | WHEREAS, This distinguished scholar completed his doctorate |
---|
30 | 31 | | in anthropology at City University of New York, where he studied |
---|
31 | 32 | | with noted anthropologist Eric R. Wolf; his many accolades include |
---|
32 | 33 | | the prestigious Curl Essay Prize of the Anthropological Institute |
---|
33 | 34 | | of Great Britain and Ireland; and |
---|
34 | 35 | | WHEREAS, Over the course of an exemplary career, Joe Heyman |
---|
35 | 36 | | has demonstrated a true passion for border and Latin American |

36 | 37 | | issues, and with his depth of knowledge and singular combination of |

37 | 38 | | talents, he is eminently qualified to enhance the reputation and |
---|
38 | 39 | | effectiveness of the Center for Inter-American and Border Studies; |

40 | 41 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |
