 R E S O L U T I O N
 WHEREAS, Dr. Richard Lange became the founding president of
 the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso in July
 2014; and
 WHEREAS, A distinguished cardiologist and gifted
 administrator, Dr. Lange also serves as dean of the Paul L. Foster
 School of Medicine at Texas Tech; he previously served for six years
 as vice chair of medicine and director of educational programs at
 The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, where
 he is a tenured professor; and
 WHEREAS, From 2004 to 2008, Dr. Lange was the chief of
 clinical cardiology and the E. Cowles Andrus Professor at Johns
 Hopkins Hospital; while there, he spearheaded efforts to raise
 funds for a new hospital, establish new satellite clinical
 programs, and increase research funding by 60 percent, to nearly
 $40 million; moreover, he launched what is considered the first
 medical podcast, and PodMED remains one of the most popular of its
 kind; and
 WHEREAS, Dr. Lange completed his bachelor's degree in
 biochemistry at the University of North Texas and went on to
 graduate from The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center;
 following an internship and residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital, he
 pursued a fellowship in cardiology at UT Southwestern; he then
 joined the faculty and became director of the Cardiac
 Catheterization Laboratory; for many years, he also served as
 fellowship program director, and he held the Jonsson-Rogers Chair
 in Cardiology and led the Audre and Bernard Rapoport Center for
 Cardiovascular Research; while a tenured professor at Johns
 Hopkins, he earned an MBA from its Carey Business School; and
 WHEREAS, Over the years, Dr. Lange has published more than
 300 journal articles and book chapters as an active clinical
 investigator in cardiology; he is a member of the editorial boards
 of numerous journals, and he served on the FDA Circulatory System
 Devices Panel; in addition, he has served as president of the
 American Heart Association Texas Affiliate, and he is the recipient
 of myriad teaching awards from students, residents, and fellows;
 and
 WHEREAS, Richard Lange has brought to his position a rare
 combination of leadership ability, medical expertise, and academic
 distinction, and he is uniquely qualified to establish a tradition
 of excellence at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center
 El Paso; now, therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
 Legislature hereby congratulate Dr. Richard Lange on his
 appointment as the inaugural president of the Texas Tech University
 Health Sciences Center El Paso and extend to him sincere best wishes
 for continued success in his important work; and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
 prepared for Dr. Lange as an expression of high regard by the Texas
 House of Representatives.
