45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Dr. Richard Lange became the founding president of
67 the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso in July
78 2014; and
89 WHEREAS, A distinguished cardiologist and gifted
910 administrator, Dr. Lange also serves as dean of the Paul L. Foster
1011 School of Medicine at Texas Tech; he previously served for six years
1112 as vice chair of medicine and director of educational programs at
1213 The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, where
1314 he is a tenured professor; and
1415 WHEREAS, From 2004 to 2008, Dr. Lange was the chief of
1516 clinical cardiology and the E. Cowles Andrus Professor at Johns
1617 Hopkins Hospital; while there, he spearheaded efforts to raise
1718 funds for a new hospital, establish new satellite clinical
1819 programs, and increase research funding by 60 percent, to nearly
1920 $40 million; moreover, he launched what is considered the first
2021 medical podcast, and PodMED remains one of the most popular of its
2122 kind; and
2223 WHEREAS, Dr. Lange completed his bachelor's degree in
2324 biochemistry at the University of North Texas and went on to
2425 graduate from The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center;
2526 following an internship and residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital, he
2627 pursued a fellowship in cardiology at UT Southwestern; he then
2728 joined the faculty and became director of the Cardiac
2829 Catheterization Laboratory; for many years, he also served as
2930 fellowship program director, and he held the Jonsson-Rogers Chair
3031 in Cardiology and led the Audre and Bernard Rapoport Center for
3132 Cardiovascular Research; while a tenured professor at Johns
3233 Hopkins, he earned an MBA from its Carey Business School; and
3334 WHEREAS, Over the years, Dr. Lange has published more than
3435 300 journal articles and book chapters as an active clinical
3536 investigator in cardiology; he is a member of the editorial boards
3637 of numerous journals, and he served on the FDA Circulatory System
3738 Devices Panel; in addition, he has served as president of the
3839 American Heart Association Texas Affiliate, and he is the recipient
3940 of myriad teaching awards from students, residents, and fellows;
4041 and
4142 WHEREAS, Richard Lange has brought to his position a rare
4243 combination of leadership ability, medical expertise, and academic
4344 distinction, and he is uniquely qualified to establish a tradition
4445 of excellence at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center
4546 El Paso; now, therefore, be it
4647 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
4748 Legislature hereby congratulate Dr. Richard Lange on his
4849 appointment as the inaugural president of the Texas Tech University
4950 Health Sciences Center El Paso and extend to him sincere best wishes
5051 for continued success in his important work; and, be it further
5152 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5253 prepared for Dr. Lange as an expression of high regard by the Texas
5354 House of Representatives.
