5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Richard Lange became the founding president of |

6 | 7 | | the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso in July |

8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, A distinguished cardiologist and gifted |
---|
9 | 10 | | administrator, Dr. Lange also serves as dean of the Paul L. Foster |
---|
10 | 11 | | School of Medicine at Texas Tech; he previously served for six years |
---|
11 | 12 | | as vice chair of medicine and director of educational programs at |
---|
12 | 13 | | The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, where |
---|
13 | 14 | | he is a tenured professor; and |
---|
14 | 15 | | WHEREAS, From 2004 to 2008, Dr. Lange was the chief of |
---|
15 | 16 | | clinical cardiology and the E. Cowles Andrus Professor at Johns |
---|
16 | 17 | | Hopkins Hospital; while there, he spearheaded efforts to raise |
---|
17 | 18 | | funds for a new hospital, establish new satellite clinical |
---|
18 | 19 | | programs, and increase research funding by 60 percent, to nearly |
---|
19 | 20 | | $40 million; moreover, he launched what is considered the first |
---|
20 | 21 | | medical podcast, and PodMED remains one of the most popular of its |
---|
21 | 22 | | kind; and |

22 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Lange completed his bachelor's degree in |

23 | 24 | | biochemistry at the University of North Texas and went on to |

24 | 25 | | graduate from The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center; |

25 | 26 | | following an internship and residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital, he |
---|
26 | 27 | | pursued a fellowship in cardiology at UT Southwestern; he then |
---|
27 | 28 | | joined the faculty and became director of the Cardiac |
---|
28 | 29 | | Catheterization Laboratory; for many years, he also served as |
---|
29 | 30 | | fellowship program director, and he held the Jonsson-Rogers Chair |

30 | 31 | | in Cardiology and led the Audre and Bernard Rapoport Center for |

31 | 32 | | Cardiovascular Research; while a tenured professor at Johns |

32 | 33 | | Hopkins, he earned an MBA from its Carey Business School; and |

33 | 34 | | WHEREAS, Over the years, Dr. Lange has published more than |

38 | 39 | | American Heart Association Texas Affiliate, and he is the recipient |

39 | 40 | | of myriad teaching awards from students, residents, and fellows; |

41 | 42 | | WHEREAS, Richard Lange has brought to his position a rare |

42 | 43 | | combination of leadership ability, medical expertise, and academic |

43 | 44 | | distinction, and he is uniquely qualified to establish a tradition |

44 | 45 | | of excellence at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center |

46 | 47 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |

47 | 48 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Dr. Richard Lange on his |
