| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, For 175 years, residents of Galveston have come |

| 6 | 7 | | together to celebrate their faith at First Presbyterian Church; and |

| 7 | 8 | | WHEREAS, First Presbyterian was established on January 1, |

| 8 | 9 | | 1840, by the Reverend John McCullough and 14 congregants; services |

| 9 | 10 | | were held in a modest wooden building until construction on the |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | current facility began in 1872; built in a popular Romanesque |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | Revival style, it has been listed as a Recorded Texas Historic |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | Landmark and is on the National Register of Historic Places; and |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | WHEREAS, The first church to be organized in Galveston, it |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | has undergone numerous restorations and renovations over the years |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | while playing a vital role in the community and providing its |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | members with myriad opportunities for spiritual growth, |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | fellowship, and outreach; it survived a fire in 1885 that destroyed |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | more than 500 structures, and it withstood the Great Galveston |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | Hurricane of 1900 as well as other major hurricanes in 1961 and |

| 20 | 21 | | 2008; and |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | WHEREAS, First Presbyterian Church serves as a source of |

| 22 | 23 | | inspiration and guidance to those who worship there, and its |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | continued existence is a testament to the unwavering commitment of |

| 24 | 25 | | its members and clergy, both past and present; now, therefore, be it |

| 25 | 26 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |

| 26 | 27 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the 175th anniversary of the |

| 27 | 28 | | founding of First Presbyterian Church and extend to the |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | congregation and clergy sincere best wishes for the future; and, be |
