45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, For 175 years, residents of Galveston have come
67 together to celebrate their faith at First Presbyterian Church; and
78 WHEREAS, First Presbyterian was established on January 1,
89 1840, by the Reverend John McCullough and 14 congregants; services
910 were held in a modest wooden building until construction on the
1011 current facility began in 1872; built in a popular Romanesque
1112 Revival style, it has been listed as a Recorded Texas Historic
1213 Landmark and is on the National Register of Historic Places; and
1314 WHEREAS, The first church to be organized in Galveston, it
1415 has undergone numerous restorations and renovations over the years
1516 while playing a vital role in the community and providing its
1617 members with myriad opportunities for spiritual growth,
1718 fellowship, and outreach; it survived a fire in 1885 that destroyed
1819 more than 500 structures, and it withstood the Great Galveston
1920 Hurricane of 1900 as well as other major hurricanes in 1961 and
2021 2008; and
2122 WHEREAS, First Presbyterian Church serves as a source of
2223 inspiration and guidance to those who worship there, and its
2324 continued existence is a testament to the unwavering commitment of
2425 its members and clergy, both past and present; now, therefore, be it
2526 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
2627 Legislature hereby commemorate the 175th anniversary of the
2728 founding of First Presbyterian Church and extend to the
2829 congregation and clergy sincere best wishes for the future; and, be
2930 it further
3031 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3132 prepared for the church as an expression of high regard by the Texas
3233 House of Representatives.
