5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, North Central Texas College--Bowie celebrated the |

6 | 7 | | 15th anniversary of its opening on March 9, 2015; and |

7 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Responding to a need for further educational |
---|
8 | 9 | | opportunities in the area, the Bowie City Council created a college |
---|
9 | 10 | | task force in 1995; community leaders subsequently partnered with |
---|
10 | 11 | | North Central Texas College, using an economic development sales |
---|
11 | 12 | | tax to fund the construction of a new campus in Bowie; in April |
---|
12 | 13 | | 1999, the city broke ground on a 16,000-square-foot building, and |
---|
13 | 14 | | the campus opened its doors for the first time in January of the |
---|
14 | 15 | | following year; and |
---|
15 | 16 | | WHEREAS, In the decade and a half since it welcomed its first |
---|
16 | 17 | | students, NCTC--Bowie has undergone significant expansion, and it |
---|
17 | 18 | | now boasts the resources of a comprehensive community college; in |
---|
18 | 19 | | the summer of 2008, the campus launched an oil-and-gas technology |
---|
19 | 20 | | program, and in 2009, that initiative received a boost with the |
---|
20 | 21 | | opening of a new wing that featured a cutting-edge petroleum |
---|
21 | 22 | | training facility, a library, learning labs, and a Student Success |
---|
22 | 23 | | Center; and |
---|
23 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Under the able leadership of current director Jose |
---|
24 | 25 | | DaSilva, the campus offers a wide variety of programs designed to |
---|
25 | 26 | | equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to enter |
---|
26 | 27 | | into prosperous and fulfilling careers, including technical |
---|
27 | 28 | | training, dual-credit courses, and pathways for transferring to |
---|
28 | 29 | | four-year schools; in addition, the campus serves the local |
---|
29 | 30 | | business community through classes on how to start a company and |
---|
30 | 31 | | through free consultations for local entrepreneurs; furthermore, |
---|
31 | 32 | | the Division of Lifelong Learning provides nontraditional students |
---|
32 | 33 | | with a number of special interest classes as well as training in |
---|
33 | 34 | | computer applications, life skills, and technical trades; and |
---|
34 | 35 | | WHEREAS, By furnishing its students with a solid educational |
---|
35 | 36 | | foundation, North Central Texas College--Bowie is stimulating |
---|
36 | 37 | | economic development in the city and the surrounding vicinity and |
---|
37 | 38 | | increasing the standard of living among area residents, and it is |
---|
38 | 39 | | indeed a privilege to recognize the campus's many contributions to |
---|
39 | 40 | | its community at this time; now, therefore, be it |

40 | 41 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |
---|
41 | 42 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the 15th anniversary of North |
---|
42 | 43 | | Central Texas College--Bowie and extend to its administration, |
---|
43 | 44 | | faculty, staff, and students sincere best wishes for continued |
---|
44 | 45 | | success; and, be it further |

45 | 46 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |

46 | 47 | | prepared for the campus as an expression of high regard by the Texas |
