5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The Kiwanis Club of Vernon is celebrating the |

6 | 7 | | centennial of Kiwanis International in March 2015; and |

7 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Founded in Detroit, Michigan, in 1915, Kiwanis |
---|
8 | 9 | | International is a coeducational service organization dedicated to |
---|
9 | 10 | | "Serving the Children of the World"; the club's objectives are to |
---|
10 | 11 | | encourage individuals to treat others as they would like to be |
---|
11 | 12 | | treated, to promote the adoption of higher standards of social and |
---|
12 | 13 | | professional behavior, and to foster an environment of |
---|
13 | 14 | | righteousness, justice, patriotism, and goodwill; furthermore, it |
---|
14 | 15 | | offers members an opportunity to form enduring friendships as they |
---|
15 | 16 | | help to build a better community; and |
---|
16 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Kiwanis International has a membership of nearly |
---|
17 | 18 | | 600,000 individuals from around the globe; each year, it raises |
---|
18 | 19 | | more than $100 million and provides over 18 million volunteer hours |
---|
19 | 20 | | to a number of worthy causes; a few years ago, the organization |
---|
20 | 21 | | partnered with UNICEF in a worldwide initiative to prevent iodine |
---|
21 | 22 | | deficiency, and the result is that 70 percent of people in |
---|
22 | 23 | | developing nations now have access to iodized salt; and |
---|
23 | 24 | | WHEREAS, The Kiwanis Club of Vernon, which was established in |
---|
24 | 25 | | 1953, exemplifies this tradition of public spirit; under the able |
---|
25 | 26 | | guidance of current president Billy Blount, the organization |
---|
26 | 27 | | sponsors and participates in a wide variety of service projects, |
---|
27 | 28 | | including the Veterans Day Breakfast, the Cool Down Vernon fan |
---|
28 | 29 | | drive, Lions Club Baseball, Coats for Children, and Star Tree; in |
---|
29 | 30 | | addition, the group has endowed a scholarship fund at Vernon |
---|
30 | 31 | | College and awards Boys and Girls Club summer scholarships; members |
---|
31 | 32 | | raise funds through their annual Pancake Breakfast, which has |
---|
32 | 33 | | become an important local tradition, and donate their own money to |
---|
33 | 34 | | the club's causes; and |
---|
34 | 35 | | WHEREAS, For more than six decades, the members of the |
---|
35 | 36 | | Kiwanis Club of Vernon have set an example of leadership and |
---|
36 | 37 | | volunteerism to which others may aspire, and they are truly |
---|
37 | 38 | | deserving of recognition for their tireless efforts in behalf of |
---|
38 | 39 | | their fellow citizens; now, therefore, be it |
---|
39 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |
---|
40 | 41 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the 100th anniversary of Kiwanis |
---|
41 | 42 | | International and commend the members of the Kiwanis Club of Vernon |
---|
42 | 43 | | for their exemplary service to their community; and, be it further |

43 | 44 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |

44 | 45 | | prepared for the Kiwanis Club of Vernon as an expression of high |

45 | 46 | | regard by the Texas House of Representatives. |
