45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, The Kiwanis Club of Vernon is celebrating the
67 centennial of Kiwanis International in March 2015; and
78 WHEREAS, Founded in Detroit, Michigan, in 1915, Kiwanis
89 International is a coeducational service organization dedicated to
910 "Serving the Children of the World"; the club's objectives are to
1011 encourage individuals to treat others as they would like to be
1112 treated, to promote the adoption of higher standards of social and
1213 professional behavior, and to foster an environment of
1314 righteousness, justice, patriotism, and goodwill; furthermore, it
1415 offers members an opportunity to form enduring friendships as they
1516 help to build a better community; and
1617 WHEREAS, Kiwanis International has a membership of nearly
1718 600,000 individuals from around the globe; each year, it raises
1819 more than $100 million and provides over 18 million volunteer hours
1920 to a number of worthy causes; a few years ago, the organization
2021 partnered with UNICEF in a worldwide initiative to prevent iodine
2122 deficiency, and the result is that 70 percent of people in
2223 developing nations now have access to iodized salt; and
2324 WHEREAS, The Kiwanis Club of Vernon, which was established in
2425 1953, exemplifies this tradition of public spirit; under the able
2526 guidance of current president Billy Blount, the organization
2627 sponsors and participates in a wide variety of service projects,
2728 including the Veterans Day Breakfast, the Cool Down Vernon fan
2829 drive, Lions Club Baseball, Coats for Children, and Star Tree; in
2930 addition, the group has endowed a scholarship fund at Vernon
3031 College and awards Boys and Girls Club summer scholarships; members
3132 raise funds through their annual Pancake Breakfast, which has
3233 become an important local tradition, and donate their own money to
3334 the club's causes; and
3435 WHEREAS, For more than six decades, the members of the
3536 Kiwanis Club of Vernon have set an example of leadership and
3637 volunteerism to which others may aspire, and they are truly
3738 deserving of recognition for their tireless efforts in behalf of
3839 their fellow citizens; now, therefore, be it
3940 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
4041 Legislature hereby commemorate the 100th anniversary of Kiwanis
4142 International and commend the members of the Kiwanis Club of Vernon
4243 for their exemplary service to their community; and, be it further
4344 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4445 prepared for the Kiwanis Club of Vernon as an expression of high
4546 regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
