| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Over nearly half a century, Shriners Hospital for |

| 6 | 7 | | Children at Galveston has provided compassionate, innovative care |

| 7 | 8 | | to pediatric patients with burn injuries; and |
|---|
| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Founded in 1966 with funds allocated by the Shriners |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | of North America, the hospital grew out of a pediatric burn unit |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | initially housed on The University of Texas Medical Branch campus; |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | with the ongoing support of the Shriners and UTMB, faculty and staff |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | of the institute have continued to seek better outcomes for |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | children by developing more advanced techniques, and because of the |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | hospital's reputation for comprehensive pediatric burn care, it has |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | received patients from around the world; and |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Located in the heart of Galveston, Shriners Hospital |

| 17 | 18 | | for Children served patients with cleft lip and palate disorders |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | until 2008, when the facility was damaged by Hurricane Ike, and the |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | decision was made to relocate that program to a sister institution, |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | Shriners Orthopedic Hospital for Children in Houston; the |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | Galveston-based hospital remains one of four Shriners Hospitals |

| 22 | 23 | | that specialize in burn care, and in 2012, it joined the Texas |

| 23 | 24 | | Medical Center as its 50th member institution; and |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Today, the hospital houses 30 beds, which are |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | divided between an intensive care unit and a reconstruction and |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | plastic surgery unit, and it also includes three operating rooms, a |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | multi-bed recovery room, and various clinics; all children are |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | welcomed at the center regardless of their family's ability to pay, |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | and every effort is made to ensure patients a safe, friendly, and |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | comfortable environment as they recover; and |
|---|
| 31 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Shriners Hospital for Children has excelled at its |
|---|
| 32 | 33 | | mission of bringing new hope to patients coping with some of the |
|---|
| 33 | 34 | | most difficult and complex childhood injuries, and through their |
|---|
| 34 | 35 | | commitment to clinical and research excellence, the center's |
|---|
| 35 | 36 | | medical staff have made countless success stories possible; now, |
|---|
| 36 | 37 | | therefore, be it |

| 37 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |

| 38 | 39 | | Legislature hereby honor Shriners Hospital for Children at |

| 39 | 40 | | Galveston and extend to all those associated with the hospital |

| 40 | 41 | | sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further |

| 41 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
