| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Situated on a half-moon inlet of Galveston Bay at |

| 9 | 10 | | the entrance to Clear Lake, this picturesque waterfront community |

| 10 | 11 | | was known as Evergreen when it was established on the Texas and New |

| 11 | 12 | | Orleans Railroad in 1898; for a time, when the railroad was hauling |

| 12 | 13 | | large quantities of seashell out of the area, it was also known as |

| 13 | 14 | | Shell Siding; and |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | WHEREAS, In 1907, it was renamed Kemah, an Indian word that |

| 15 | 16 | | means "facing the wind," for the steady, refreshing breezes that |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | blow off the Gulf of Mexico; in the 1920s, the town was a center for |

| 17 | 18 | | shrimping and the oil and ship-building industries, and from |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | Prohibition until the 1950s, it enjoyed a lively reputation as the |

| 19 | 20 | | home of bootleggers and illegal casinos; and |

| 20 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Incorporated in March 1965, Kemah thrives today as a |

| 21 | 22 | | getaway for residents of Houston and Galveston; a marina was |

| 22 | 23 | | constructed in the 1980s, and since 1997, the Kemah Boardwalk has |

| 23 | 24 | | drawn countless visitors with its family-friendly entertainment |

| 24 | 25 | | complex, featuring shops, restaurants, a boutique hotel, and |

| 25 | 26 | | fairground rides; and |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | WHEREAS, Blessed with a colorful history and a beautiful |

| 27 | 28 | | location on the Gulf of Mexico, the residents of Kemah may take |

| 28 | 29 | | great pride in their community as they work together to preserve its |

| 29 | 30 | | charm and build a bright future; now, therefore, be it |

| 30 | 31 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |

| 31 | 32 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the 50th anniversary of the |

| 32 | 33 | | incorporation of Kemah and extend to its citizens sincere best |
