H.R. No. 2042 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, The Canadian High School boys' basketball team reached the pinnacle of success by winning the University Interscholastic League 2A state championship on March 14, 2015, at the Alamodome in San Antonio; and WHEREAS, The Wildcats finished with a record of 21 wins and just 1 defeat, and their impressive run through the postseason included victories over Claude, Panhandle, Smyer, and Farwell High Schools to clinch Canadian's first trip to the UIL state tournament since 1945; and WHEREAS, In the 2A semifinals, the Wildcats jumped out to a double-digit halftime lead over the squad from Martin's Mill High School and went on to record a 68-62 win; that set the stage for the title game, where Canadian matched up against the top-ranked team from Big Sandy High School in a hard-fought contest that featured 4 ties and 10 lead changes; trailing by two points entering the fourth quarter, the Wildcats took the lead for good on a three-pointer by senior guard Braiden Galla with just under five minutes to play and closed out a 68-60 triumph with clutch free-throw shooting down the stretch; the victory was all the more special because it earned Canadian High School its first state championship in the sport; and WHEREAS, Mr. Galla was named the title game Most Valuable Player after scoring 17 points and hauling in 3 rebounds, while teammates Sawyer Cook and Cameron Copley joined him on the All-Tournament Team; excelling with a true team effort, the Wildcats also received essential contributions throughout the season from the other members of the roster: Caleb Davis, Tanner Schafer, Ethan Lusk, Cooper Trolinger, Matthew Lynch, Branden Carson, Trae Dwyer, Cory Chidester, Corbin Douthitt, Cody Gill, Cody Wolfe, Tyler Richardson, Alexander Cervantes, Manny Ramsey, and Bryce Chidester; and WHEREAS, These dedicated competitors were ably guided by head coach Andy Copley and assistant coaches Jeff Isom, Hayden Merket, and Tim Fletcher; additional support was provided by managers Ben Bryant, Reagan Cochran, and Josh Culwell, trainer Brian Mullins, statistician Jamie Copley, and videographer Gage Greenhouse; and WHEREAS, Winning a state championship is the goal of every high school athlete; the hard work and skill demonstrated by the Canadian High School players have enabled them to realize that dream, and they will treasure the memory of this outstanding accomplishment for many years to come; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate the Canadian High School boys' basketball team on winning the 2015 UIL 2A state championship and extend to the team's players, coaches, and staff sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the team as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
