45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, The YMCA of Metropolitan Fort Worth is celebrating
67 the 125th anniversary of its founding in 2015; and
78 WHEREAS, When it was established in 1890, Fort Worth's YMCA
89 focused on meeting the physical and spiritual needs of the young men
910 frequenting the streets and saloons of the frontier town; the
1011 organization used its "Gospel Wagon" to convey patrons to its
1112 facilities, which included a dormitory, reading rooms, gymnasiums,
1213 and space for social interaction; and
1314 WHEREAS, Two prominent Fort Worth leaders, Amon G. Carter Sr.
1415 and Amon G. Carter Jr., played key roles in the expansion of the
1516 YMCA in the first part of the 20th century; the senior Mr. Carter
1617 served on the board in the early years and laid the cornerstone for
1718 the Downtown YMCA building in 1924; in addition, he donated land for
1819 the creation of Camp Carter YMCA; his son later became board chair
1920 and further developed the camp and other initiatives; and
2021 WHEREAS, In order to meet the needs of the growing city, the
2122 association has opened a number of new facilities over the years;
2223 today, it encompasses 13 branches, including Camp Carter, and it
2324 serves more than 100,000 people of all ages in both Tarrant and Hood
2425 Counties; its locations offer a wide range of programs, among them
2526 health and wellness, athletics, aquatics, after-school activities,
2627 child care, and arts education; and
2728 WHEREAS, The YMCA of Metropolitan Fort Worth has demonstrated
2829 an unyielding commitment to the strength and vibrancy of the
2930 community, and over the course of its long history, it has made a
3031 positive difference in the lives of countless residents; now,
3132 therefore, be it
3233 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
3334 Legislature hereby congratulate the YMCA of Metropolitan Fort Worth
3435 on its 125th anniversary and extend to all those associated with
3536 this outstanding organization sincere best wishes for continued
3637 success; and, be it further
3738 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3839 prepared for the organization as an expression of high regard by the
3940 Texas House of Representatives.
