6		-	AS, Members of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Thorndale are
	6	+	WHEREAS, Members of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Thorndale are
7	7		commemorating a significant milestone in 2015 as they celebrate the
8	8		125th anniversary of their church's founding; and
9	9		WHEREAS, In the early 1880s, August Polnick and his family
10	10		became the first Germans and Lutherans to settle in Thorndale; as
11	11		other families came to the area, they began to gather on Sundays to
12	12		worship in alternating homes in the community; eventually, Karl
13	13		Michalk donated 10 acres for a church and school, and on December
14	14		21, 1890, Mr. Michalk and seven others signed a charter to create
15	15		St. Paul Lutheran Church; and
16	16		WHEREAS, The church grew rapidly, and in 1899, members
17	17		decided to build a new 40-by-60-foot building with an altar
18	18		extension, nearly doubling the size of the original structure; the
19	19		new church and school building was dedicated on July 8, 1900, and
20	20		offered morning and evening services in German, as well as an
21	21		afternoon service in English; both church and school have continued
22	22		to grow and participate in the development of the Thorndale area;
23	23		and
24	24		WHEREAS, For 125 years, the St. Paul Lutheran Church has
25	25		served countless residents who seek a full and meaningful spiritual
26	26		life, and the school has effectively helped many children begin
27	27		their educational journey; on this special occasion in the
28	28		institution's rich history, it is a privilege to recognize the
29	29		ongoing commitment of the congregation to its faith and to the wider
30	30		community; now, therefore, be it
31	31		RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
32	32		Legislature hereby commemorate the 125th anniversary of the
33	33		founding of St. Paul Lutheran Church of Thorndale and extend to all
34	34		those associated with the church sincere best wishes for the
35	35		future; and, be it further
36	36		RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
37	37		prepared for the church as an expression of high regard by the Texas
38	38		House of Representatives.
