45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Corpus Christi lost an esteemed community leader
67 with the passing of Donelda Daub Sluyter on April 3, 2015, at the
78 age of 74; and
89 WHEREAS, Born in Alberta, Canada, on June 1, 1942, the former
910 Doni Daub grew up in Calgary and Lethbridge; she moved to Tulsa,
1011 Oklahoma, to attend college, and there she met her future husband,
1112 Dr. Gary V. Sluyter, with whom she would have a beloved son,
1213 Michael; and
1314 WHEREAS, Ms. Sluyter became a naturalized citizen in 1969,
1415 while living in Austin, and she completed her bachelor's degree in
1516 business administration two years later; after residing in Houston,
1617 she moved with her family to Corpus Christi; and
1718 WHEREAS, Early in her career, Ms. Sluyter worked for the
1819 Penneco Oil Company; she later established her own CPA firm, and she
1920 owned a boutique, Bolero's, and a second shop in Rockport;
2021 subsequently, she was employed by other CPA accounting firms before
2122 starting a successful solo practice from her home; in recognition
2223 of her professional accomplishments, she received a Y Women in
2324 Careers Award from the YWCA; and
2425 WHEREAS, Committed to the betterment of her community,
2526 Ms. Sluyter served as president of the Corpus Christi Branch of the
2627 YWCA, and she chaired its finance committee and its Women in Careers
2728 Awards event; a founding board member of the Tuloso-Midway ISD
2829 Education Foundation, she served as its treasurer for 10 years, and
2930 she also was a member of the boards of the Corpus Christi Women's
3031 Shelter and the Corpus Christi Chamber Music Society; moreover, she
3132 was president of the local branch of the American Association of
3233 University Women (AAUW) and chaired its Outreach Committee, which
3334 provided assistance to high school students; she gave generously to
3435 numerous causes, and she was especially dedicated to helping
3536 animals; and
3637 WHEREAS, Ms. Sluyter had many talents, and she crafted
3738 beautiful artworks as an active member of the Hericane Stampers; an
3839 avid reader, she belonged to both the Corpus Christi Literary
3940 Reading Series and an AAUW book club; she loved to travel and to
4041 entertain, and she was a charming and gracious hostess; for a number
4142 of years, she met monthly with a group known as the Goddesses to
4243 celebrate birthdays and other occasions; and
4344 WHEREAS, Deeply devoted to her family and her community, Doni
4445 Sluyter made a meaningful difference in the lives of her loved ones
4546 and fellow citizens alike, and her contributions will be fondly
4647 remembered for years to come; now, therefore, be it
4748 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
4849 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Donelda Daub
4950 Sluyter and extend sincere condolences to her loved ones: to her
5051 son, Michael Sluyter, and his wife, Shalla; to her granddaughter,
5152 Allison Faria; to her sisters, Mary Stubbs and Michelle Low; to her
5253 brothers, Daniel Daub and his wife, Deborah, Peter Daub and his
5354 wife, Kay, and Gary Daub and his wife, Lisa; and to her many other
5455 relatives and friends; and, be it further
5556 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5657 prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of
5758 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Doni
5859 Sluyter.
