 R E S O L U T I O N
 WHEREAS, Davis Apparel Shop, an award-winning Dallas
 institution, is celebrating its 50th anniversary with a gala
 luncheon on April 20, 2015; and
 WHEREAS, Founded in 1965 by Connie and Alvin Davis, this
 pioneering business quickly became the largest African
 American-owned boutique in South Dallas, attracting
 fashion-forward customers from throughout the area with its
 remarkable selection; the store also staged fashion shows and
 offered classes in fashion etiquette and techniques, helping to
 build self-esteem and confidence among the community's young
 people; and
 WHEREAS, In 1989, Davis Apparel changed its business plan and
 began to market uniforms to major companies in the hospitality,
 public safety, medical, and manufacturing industries; by 1998, the
 shop was recognized as a national leader in the distribution of
 professional uniforms; and
 WHEREAS, Over the years, Davis Apparel has provided
 opportunities and mentorship for many young people in the
 community; several of the individuals who attended fashion classes
 in the shop's early years went on to become professional models, and
 in recent years, the store has regularly sponsored interns from
 Paul Quinn College; and
 WHEREAS, Davis Apparel and its founders have been honored on
 many occasions; Mrs. Davis was named Woman of the Year by the Pylon
 Business Club in 1977, and she received the Quest for Success Award
 from the Dallas Black Chamber of Commerce in 1986 and the Summit
 Award from the African American Women Entrepreneurs in 1997; the
 shop has received recognition from the Minority Business
 Development Agency of the U.S. Department of Commerce, the Legacy
 Award from the Urban League of Greater Dallas, and the Veolia
 Transportation Vendor Application Award; and
 WHEREAS, Mr. Davis passed away in 2011 and Mrs. Davis in
 2012, and today Alvin Davis Jr. carries on the legacy of his parents
 as president and general manager of Davis Apparel Shop; and
 WHEREAS, For half a century, Davis Apparel Shop has made a
 significant contribution to the prosperity of its community and
 offered countless young people an introduction to the business
 world, and it is a pleasure to honor this unique Lone Star success
 story; now, therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
 Legislature hereby commemorate the 50th anniversary of Davis
 Apparel Shop and extend to Mr. Davis and his staff sincere best
 wishes for continued success; and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
 prepared for Davis Apparel Shop as an expression of high regard by
 the Texas House of Representatives.
