No. 2143 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, The H-E-B chain of grocery stores is marking a significant milestone in 2015 with the celebration of its 110th anniversary, and this occasion provides a fitting opportunity to recognize the company's contributions to Corpus Christi and other cities in Texas; and WHEREAS, Founded in Kerrville in 1905, H-E-B began expanding its operations throughout the 1920s, and Corpus Christi was the largest city to have an H-E-B store when the company opened its first location there in 1931; today, the city is home to 10 stores, including two H-E-B Plus facilities; and WHEREAS, A good corporate citizen in the communities it serves, H-E-B supports a variety of public and charitable programs; last year, the company donated approximately 29 million pounds of food and nonperishable items to food banks in Texas and Mexico; furthermore, the H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards program gives more than $740,000 annually to deserving educators and school districts; and WHEREAS, H-E-B has received the Texas Governor's Award for Environmental Excellence three times in recognition of company-wide efforts to promote conservation and efficiency; in 2010, Progressive Grocer magazine named H-E-B the Retailer of the Year for its myriad achievements in the industry and for its significant community involvement; and WHEREAS, Businesses that give back to the community and contribute to the local economy are important components of a prosperous future, and H-E-B is deserving of recognition for the positive role it plays in Corpus Christi and throughout the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas Legislature hereby honor the H-E-B chain of grocery stores for its contributions to the Corpus Christi area and extend to the company and its employees sincere best wishes for a memorable 110th anniversary celebration; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for H-E-B as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
