No. 2145 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Members of the League of Women Voters of Corpus Christi are celebrating the 70th anniversary of the founding of their notable organization in 2015; and WHEREAS, Established in Chicago by members of the National American Woman Suffrage Association in February 1920, only months before women won the right to vote with the passage of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, the League of Women Voters has grown into one of the most influential nonpartisan political organizations in the nation and is today open to men as well as women; and WHEREAS, One of 27 local leagues in Texas, the League of Women Voters of Corpus Christi champions responsible citizenship and government; its members have raised awareness of a wide range of issues of importance to area residents, including community health, immigration, ambulance service, water management, education, and the city charter, and have worked tirelessly to promote an informed electorate, publishing more than 100 voter guides and conducting over 100 candidate forums; and WHEREAS, Three influential Corpus Christi mayors, Betty Turner, Mary Rhodes, and Nelda Martinez, are counted among the organization's members; and WHEREAS, The League of Women Voters of Corpus Christi has long been a catalyst for meaningful civic engagement, and as members observe the group's 70th anniversary, they may indeed take pride in the important role they play in elevating public discourse and influencing public policy through education and advocacy; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas Legislature hereby recognize May 23, 2015, as League of Women Voters of Corpus Christi Day and commemorate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the Corpus Christi league; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the organization as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
