5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Richard D. Pineda, an associate professor in the |

8 | 9 | | Studies, was presented with the 2014 Córdova-Puchot Scholar of the |

9 | 10 | | Year Award at the annual meeting of the National Communication |

10 | 11 | | Association on November 21, 2014, in Chicago; and |

11 | 12 | | WHEREAS, Given by the association's Latina/o Communication |
---|
12 | 13 | | Studies Division/La Raza Caucus, the Córdova-Puchot Award |
---|
13 | 14 | | recognizes a communication faculty member who has achieved a high |
---|
14 | 15 | | level of excellence in the areas of research, teaching, service, |
---|
15 | 16 | | and advocacy; and |

16 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Pineda is a published author whose research |

17 | 18 | | explores politics and media and has focused most recently on |

18 | 19 | | immigration and how it is represented in popular culture; because |

19 | 20 | | of his expertise in political communication and strategy, he is |
---|
20 | 21 | | often called on by the local and regional media for commentary about |

21 | 22 | | campaigns and elections; and |

22 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Inside the classroom, Dr. Pineda has worked to build |
---|
23 | 24 | | a stimulating learning environment for his students by encouraging |
---|
24 | 25 | | them to pursue their own ideas and to think broadly about the |
---|
25 | 26 | | application of lessons to the outside world; he further serves the |
---|
26 | 27 | | university as a member of the Director's Circle for the Stanlee and |
---|
27 | 28 | | Gerald Rubin Center for the Visual Arts, and he has given back to |
---|
28 | 29 | | the wider community as well through his time on the City of El Paso |
---|
29 | 30 | | Ethics Review Board and the Capital Improvement Advisory Committee; |

31 | 32 | | WHEREAS, A lifelong El Paso resident, Dr. Pineda earned his |

32 | 33 | | bachelor's degree in political science at Baylor University and his |
---|
33 | 34 | | master's degree in communication at UTEP; he holds a Ph.D. in |

34 | 35 | | communication from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan; and |

35 | 36 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Richard Pineda has established himself as a |

36 | 37 | | scholar of immense dedication and insight and a distinguished |
---|
37 | 38 | | member of the UTEP community, and this award justly recognizes him |

38 | 39 | | for his myriad professional achievements; now, therefore, be it |

39 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |
