5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Nancy Hamilton was inducted into the Hall of Honor |

6 | 7 | | by the El Paso County Historical Society on November 3, 2013; and |

7 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Since 1961, the EPCHS has annually recognized |
---|
8 | 9 | | individuals who have made significant contributions to El Paso |
---|
9 | 10 | | County, and Mrs. Hamilton is most deserving of this important honor |
---|
10 | 11 | | for her accomplishments as a writer, journalist, public relations |
---|
11 | 12 | | professional, and local historian; and |
---|
12 | 13 | | WHEREAS, The former Nancy Miller was born in El Paso on August |
---|
13 | 14 | | 22, 1929, to Harold and Corinne Miller; she graduated from Austin |
---|
14 | 15 | | High School and went on to earn a bachelor's degree in journalism in |
---|
15 | 16 | | 1949 and a master's degree in English in 1954 from The University of |
---|
16 | 17 | | Texas at El Paso; she married Ralph Hamilton in 1968, and became the |
---|
17 | 18 | | proud stepmother of James and Jeannie; and |
---|
18 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Mrs. Hamilton began her professional career in |
---|
19 | 20 | | 1950, working for the El Paso Times for nine years before joining |
---|
20 | 21 | | the El Paso Independent School District; she then returned to |
---|
21 | 22 | | journalism, writing for the El Paso Herald-Post, before going to |
---|
22 | 23 | | work at UTEP in 1976, first in media relations and then as the |
---|
23 | 24 | | associate director of Texas Western Press until her retirement in |
---|
24 | 25 | | 1990; she remained active as an editor of the press for the next |
---|
25 | 26 | | decade, and in 1997 and 1998 she was a part-time lecturer in public |
---|
26 | 27 | | relations for the UTEP Department of Communication; and |
---|
27 | 28 | | WHEREAS, A prolific writer, Mrs. Hamilton wrote numerous |
---|
28 | 29 | | features on local history, which led to the publication of a |
---|
29 | 30 | | biography, Ben Dowell, El Paso's First Mayor, and UTEP: A Pictorial |
---|
30 | 31 | | History of The University of Texas at El Paso; she also has |
---|
31 | 32 | | contributed to the revised Handbook of Texas, coauthored several |
---|
32 | 33 | | books on Texas and El Paso history, and served as editor for myriad |
---|
33 | 34 | | historical publications; and |
---|
34 | 35 | | WHEREAS, Deeply committed to her community, Mrs. Hamilton |
---|
35 | 36 | | has served with a number of noteworthy groups, including the El Paso |
---|
36 | 37 | | County Historical Commission and the Four Centuries '81 Commission; |
---|
37 | 38 | | additionally, she has held leadership roles with such organizations |
---|
38 | 39 | | as the UTEP Heritage Commission and the Pioneers Association of El |
---|
39 | 40 | | Paso County; and |
---|
40 | 41 | | WHEREAS, Nancy Hamilton has made many notable contributions |
---|
41 | 42 | | to her community as she has worked to preserve and celebrate its |
---|
42 | 43 | | rich history, and she has earned the lasting respect and |
---|
43 | 44 | | appreciation of her fellow citizens; now, therefore, be it |
---|
44 | 45 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |
---|
45 | 46 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Nancy Hamilton on her induction |
---|
46 | 47 | | into the Hall of Honor by the El Paso County Historical Society and |
---|
47 | 48 | | extend to her sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further |
---|
48 | 49 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |

49 | 50 | | prepared for Mrs. Hamilton as an expression of high regard by the |

50 | 51 | | Texas House of Representatives. |
