H.R. No. 2176
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Sheriff Dennis J. Kelly of the Nueces County
Sheriff's Office lost his life in the line of duty on June 13, 1870,
and his service and sacrifice will not soon be forgotten; and
WHEREAS, Dennis Kelly was appointed as sheriff of Nueces
County on April 16, 1869, and he went on to win election to the
position in December of that same year; the following June, he was
shot and killed by a wanted man on the street in Corpus Christi;
Sheriff Kelly was 43 at the time of his death, and he left behind a
wife and five children; and
WHEREAS, Our state and nation benefit immeasurably from the
courage and commitment of law enforcement professionals such as
Sheriff Dennis J. Kelly, who willingly place themselves in harm's
way each day to safeguard the lives and property of their fellow
citizens; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life and exemplary service of
Sheriff Dennis J. Kelly of the Nueces County Sheriff's Office.
