| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Sheriff Dennis J. Kelly of the Nueces County |

| 6 | 7 | | Sheriff's Office lost his life in the line of duty on June 13, 1870, |

| 7 | 8 | | and his service and sacrifice will not soon be forgotten; and |

| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Dennis Kelly was appointed as sheriff of Nueces |

| 9 | 10 | | County on April 16, 1869, and he went on to win election to the |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | position in December of that same year; the following June, he was |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | shot and killed by a wanted man on the street in Corpus Christi; |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | Sheriff Kelly was 43 at the time of his death, and he left behind a |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | wife and five children; and |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Our state and nation benefit immeasurably from the |

| 15 | 16 | | courage and commitment of law enforcement professionals such as |

| 16 | 17 | | Sheriff Dennis J. Kelly, who willingly place themselves in harm's |

| 17 | 18 | | way each day to safeguard the lives and property of their fellow |

| 18 | 19 | | citizens; now, therefore, be it |

| 19 | 20 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |

| 20 | 21 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life and exemplary service of |
