8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, In September 1877, Deputy Sheriff Shaw and an |

9 | 10 | | assistant rode to Brooks County to arrest a man who was wanted for |

10 | 11 | | selling stolen hides; Deputy Sheriff Shaw rode in the back of a |

11 | 12 | | wagon with the prisoner, his wife, and their two children on the |

12 | 13 | | return trip, and while the party was stopped in Banquete, someone |
---|
13 | 14 | | stabbed the deputy to death; the prisoner's wife claimed the deputy |

14 | 15 | | was assaulted by a party of armed men, but her husband was later put |

15 | 16 | | on trial for the murder; and |

16 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Our state and nation benefit immeasurably from the |

17 | 18 | | courage and commitment of law enforcement professionals such as |

18 | 19 | | Deputy Sheriff Thomas Shaw, who willingly place themselves in |

19 | 20 | | harm's way each day to safeguard the lives and property of their |

21 | 22 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |
