| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Deputy Sheriff Thomas Shaw of the Nueces County |

| 7 | 8 | | 1877, and his service and sacrifice will not soon be forgotten; and |

| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, In September 1877, Deputy Sheriff Shaw and an |

| 9 | 10 | | assistant rode to Brooks County to arrest a man who was wanted for |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | selling stolen hides; Deputy Sheriff Shaw rode in the back of a |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | wagon with the prisoner, his wife, and their two children on the |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | return trip, and while the party was stopped in Banquete, someone |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | stabbed the deputy to death; the prisoner's wife claimed the deputy |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | was assaulted by a party of armed men, but her husband was later put |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | on trial for the murder; and |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Our state and nation benefit immeasurably from the |

| 17 | 18 | | courage and commitment of law enforcement professionals such as |

| 18 | 19 | | Deputy Sheriff Thomas Shaw, who willingly place themselves in |

| 19 | 20 | | harm's way each day to safeguard the lives and property of their |

| 20 | 21 | | fellow citizens; now, therefore, be it |

| 21 | 22 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |

| 22 | 23 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life and exemplary service of |
