| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Don T. Haynes Jr. is retiring as director of bands at |

| 6 | 7 | | LBJ High School in Austin in May 2015, concluding a distinguished |
|---|
| 7 | 8 | | career in education that has spanned 41 years; and |
|---|
| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, An exceptionally gifted teacher, Don Haynes has led |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | the school's bands since 1975, and his students have won numerous |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | first-place awards at festivals in Texas, Florida, Oklahoma, |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | California, and Colorado; the LBJ bands consistently take Division |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | 1 and sweepstakes honors in UIL marching and concert competitions, |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | and the LBJ Marching Band has made five appearances in the UIL State |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | Marching Band Contest; and |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | WHEREAS, The Jaguar Band has performed twice in London and |

| 16 | 17 | | once in Paris, and 150 band members toured China as musical |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | ambassadors for a week in 2007; while instilling in his students a |

| 18 | 19 | | sense of discipline and a strong commitment to excellence, |

| 19 | 20 | | Mr. Haynes has demonstrated great kindness as well, giving |

| 20 | 21 | | youngsters rides when they lack transportation and even springing |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | for lunch when they forget to bring food to summer band practices; |

| 23 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Frequently invited to conduct region bands, |

| 24 | 25 | | Mr. Haynes has also made guest appearances in New Mexico, |

| 25 | 26 | | Louisiana, and Florida; his vision guided the creation of the |

| 26 | 27 | | Capital City Marching Festival, now one of the state's top |

| 27 | 28 | | UIL-preparatory events; he is an active UIL adjudicator for concert |

| 28 | 29 | | and marching bands at all levels, and he has served on the UIL State |

| 29 | 30 | | Sightreading Advisory Committee; in addition, he has benefited the |

| 30 | 31 | | Texas Music Educators Association in many leadership roles, |

| 31 | 32 | | including as a member of its advisory board, and he has served as |

| 32 | 33 | | president of the Texas Bandmasters Association; and |

| 33 | 34 | | WHEREAS, In 2007, the Austin Independent School District |

| 34 | 35 | | board voted to name the new LBJ High School auditorium the Don T. |

| 35 | 36 | | Haynes Theater; moreover, Mr. Haynes is the recipient of the |

| 36 | 37 | | prestigious UIL Denius Award and the AISD African American Heritage |

| 37 | 38 | | Award, and his colleagues have selected him as Teacher of the Year |

| 38 | 39 | | four times; and |
|---|
| 39 | 40 | | WHEREAS, This esteemed educator holds both a bachelor's |
|---|
| 40 | 41 | | degree in music and a master's degree in instrumental music |
|---|
| 41 | 42 | | conducting from The University of Texas at Austin; before joining |
|---|
| 42 | 43 | | the LBJ High School faculty, he was the assistant band director at |
|---|
| 43 | 44 | | Anderson High School for two years; and |
|---|
| 44 | 45 | | WHEREAS, Throughout his long career, Don Haynes has served as |

| 45 | 46 | | an exemplary mentor and role model, and he has helped countless |
|---|
| 46 | 47 | | young Texans not only improve their skills as musicians but also |
|---|
| 47 | 48 | | develop confidence, character, and the positive focus they need to |
|---|
| 48 | 49 | | lead happy, productive lives; now, therefore, be it |

| 49 | 50 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |

| 50 | 51 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Don T. Haynes Jr. on his retirement |

| 51 | 52 | | from LBJ High School and extend to him sincere best wishes for the |
