45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Don T. Haynes Jr. is retiring as director of bands at
67 LBJ High School in Austin in May 2015, concluding a distinguished
78 career in education that has spanned 41 years; and
89 WHEREAS, An exceptionally gifted teacher, Don Haynes has led
910 the school's bands since 1975, and his students have won numerous
1011 first-place awards at festivals in Texas, Florida, Oklahoma,
1112 California, and Colorado; the LBJ bands consistently take Division
1213 1 and sweepstakes honors in UIL marching and concert competitions,
1314 and the LBJ Marching Band has made five appearances in the UIL State
1415 Marching Band Contest; and
1516 WHEREAS, The Jaguar Band has performed twice in London and
1617 once in Paris, and 150 band members toured China as musical
1718 ambassadors for a week in 2007; while instilling in his students a
1819 sense of discipline and a strong commitment to excellence,
1920 Mr. Haynes has demonstrated great kindness as well, giving
2021 youngsters rides when they lack transportation and even springing
2122 for lunch when they forget to bring food to summer band practices;
2223 and
2324 WHEREAS, Frequently invited to conduct region bands,
2425 Mr. Haynes has also made guest appearances in New Mexico,
2526 Louisiana, and Florida; his vision guided the creation of the
2627 Capital City Marching Festival, now one of the state's top
2728 UIL-preparatory events; he is an active UIL adjudicator for concert
2829 and marching bands at all levels, and he has served on the UIL State
2930 Sightreading Advisory Committee; in addition, he has benefited the
3031 Texas Music Educators Association in many leadership roles,
3132 including as a member of its advisory board, and he has served as
3233 president of the Texas Bandmasters Association; and
3334 WHEREAS, In 2007, the Austin Independent School District
3435 board voted to name the new LBJ High School auditorium the Don T.
3536 Haynes Theater; moreover, Mr. Haynes is the recipient of the
3637 prestigious UIL Denius Award and the AISD African American Heritage
3738 Award, and his colleagues have selected him as Teacher of the Year
3839 four times; and
3940 WHEREAS, This esteemed educator holds both a bachelor's
4041 degree in music and a master's degree in instrumental music
4142 conducting from The University of Texas at Austin; before joining
4243 the LBJ High School faculty, he was the assistant band director at
4344 Anderson High School for two years; and
4445 WHEREAS, Throughout his long career, Don Haynes has served as
4546 an exemplary mentor and role model, and he has helped countless
4647 young Texans not only improve their skills as musicians but also
4748 develop confidence, character, and the positive focus they need to
4849 lead happy, productive lives; now, therefore, be it
4950 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
5051 Legislature hereby congratulate Don T. Haynes Jr. on his retirement
5152 from LBJ High School and extend to him sincere best wishes for the
5253 future; and, be it further
5354 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5455 prepared for Mr. Haynes as an expression of high regard by the Texas
5556 House of Representatives.
