H.R. No. 2216 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, In an impressive display of skill and determination, Texas native Jordan Spieth captured the 79th Masters Tournament championship on April 12, 2015; and WHEREAS, Competing against the game's best at Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia, Mr. Spieth put on a dazzling performance throughout the event, beginning with the opening round, when he posted an 8-under 64 to take a three-shot lead on the field; during the second round, he made six birdies with no bogies to bolster his lead, and his two-day score of 14-under par set a new 36-hole scoring mark for the Masters; and WHEREAS, Mr. Spieth continued his pace-setting week by shooting a 2-under 70 in both of the final rounds, ultimately carding a total score of 18-under 270 to match the tournament record set by Tiger Woods in 1997; en route to becoming the second-youngest player to earn the coveted green jacket, he was the first Masters contestant to lead the entire event since Raymond Floyd accomplished that feat in 1976; and WHEREAS, The Masters victory marks the first major championship for Mr. Spieth and the latest in a string of notable achievements; he began playing golf at the age of nine at Brookhaven Country Club in Dallas, and his budding talent was later nurtured by golf coach Cameron McCormick; he established himself as a prodigy by winning the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship in 2009 and 2011, joining Tiger Woods as the only golfers to win the event twice; and WHEREAS, This accomplished athlete went on to attend The University of Texas at Austin, where he led the Longhorns to the NCAA Championship as a freshman and received Big 12 Player of the Year and All-American first team honors; at 19 years of age, he turned professional and became the PGA Tour's youngest winner since 1931 with his triumph at the 2013 John Deere Classic; he later placed second at the Wyndham and Tour Championships and capped off his first season by being named the PGA Tour Rookie of the Year and being selected for the Presidents Cup team; he furthered his success in 2014 by notching runner-up finishes at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions and his inaugural Masters Tournament, and he later won his second PGA Tour event at the 2015 Valspar Championship; and WHEREAS, By delivering one of the finest performances in the history of the Masters Tournament, Jordan Spieth has proven himself as one of the sport's premier competitors, and he is indeed deserving of recognition for his outstanding accomplishment; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Jordan Spieth on winning the 2015 Masters Tournament and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Spieth as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
