56 WHEREAS, Residents of Brownsville are gathering in Austin on
67 January 28, 2015, to celebrate Brownsville Day at the State
78 Capitol; and
89 WHEREAS, The site of Brownsville was originally settled under
910 a 1781 Spanish land grant, and in 1846, it became the location of a
1011 fortification constructed by soldiers led by General Zachary Taylor
1112 in preparation for the coming war with Mexico; named Fort Brown in
1213 honor of Major Jacob Brown, who died in an attack on the United
1314 States forces, the area became part of the State of Texas when the
1415 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed in 1848; and
1516 WHEREAS, Brownsville was made county seat of the newly
1617 established Cameron County in January 1849, and it soon replaced
1718 Matamoros as the leading trade center for the area; from its early
1819 days, the city had a cosmopolitan and multilingual character, with
1920 the 1850 Census showing that two-thirds of the residents were from
2021 the Eastern United States and the remainder from Mexico, Ireland,
2122 France, England, and Germany; and
2223 WHEREAS, Now the largest city in the Lower Rio Grande Valley
2324 with more than 181,000 people, Brownsville celebrates its heritage
2425 as an active gateway between two countries that are joined by
2526 hundreds of years of tradition, history, and family; and
2627 WHEREAS, Building on the unique strengths of its population
2728 and economic assets, the Brownsville community has come together to
2829 develop the Imagine Brownsville Comprehensive Plan, and the United
2930 Brownsville partnership was formed to ensure the implementation of
3031 the plan; and
3132 WHEREAS, Members of the partnership are committed to
3233 maximizing the advantages of their access to a deep-sea port and
3334 international markets to create a local economy that will drive
3435 prosperity for the region and this state; they include
3536 representatives of the City of Brownsville, the Brownsville
3637 Navigation District, The University of Texas at Brownsville, the
3738 Brownsville Community Improvement Corporation, Texas Southmost
3839 College, the Greater Brownsville Incentives Corporation, the
3940 Brownsville Independent School District, the Brownsville Public
4041 Utilities Board, the Brownsville Chamber of Commerce, the
4142 Brownsville Economic Development Council, the Brownsville
4243 Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Brownsville South Padre Island
4344 International Airport, the United Way of Southern Cameron County,
4445 Cameron County, and Workforce Solutions Cameron; and
4546 WHEREAS, A dynamic community that draws on a rich history as
4647 it prepares for an exciting future, Brownsville has established
4748 itself as an outstanding place in which to live and work, and its
4849 citizens may take great pride in the area's ongoing achievements;
4950 now, therefore, be it
5051 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
5152 Legislature hereby recognize January 28, 2015, as Brownsville Day
5253 at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation sincere
5354 best wishes for an enjoyable stay in Austin.
