6 | 7 | | January 28, 2015, to celebrate Brownsville Day at the State |

8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, The site of Brownsville was originally settled under |
---|
9 | 10 | | a 1781 Spanish land grant, and in 1846, it became the location of a |
---|
10 | 11 | | fortification constructed by soldiers led by General Zachary Taylor |
---|
11 | 12 | | in preparation for the coming war with Mexico; named Fort Brown in |
---|
12 | 13 | | honor of Major Jacob Brown, who died in an attack on the United |
---|
13 | 14 | | States forces, the area became part of the State of Texas when the |
---|
14 | 15 | | Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed in 1848; and |
---|
15 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Brownsville was made county seat of the newly |
---|
16 | 17 | | established Cameron County in January 1849, and it soon replaced |
---|
17 | 18 | | Matamoros as the leading trade center for the area; from its early |
---|
18 | 19 | | days, the city had a cosmopolitan and multilingual character, with |
---|
19 | 20 | | the 1850 Census showing that two-thirds of the residents were from |
---|
20 | 21 | | the Eastern United States and the remainder from Mexico, Ireland, |
---|
21 | 22 | | France, England, and Germany; and |
---|
22 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Now the largest city in the Lower Rio Grande Valley |

23 | 24 | | with more than 181,000 people, Brownsville celebrates its heritage |

24 | 25 | | as an active gateway between two countries that are joined by |

25 | 26 | | hundreds of years of tradition, history, and family; and |

26 | 27 | | WHEREAS, Building on the unique strengths of its population |

27 | 28 | | and economic assets, the Brownsville community has come together to |

28 | 29 | | develop the Imagine Brownsville Comprehensive Plan, and the United |

29 | 30 | | Brownsville partnership was formed to ensure the implementation of |

31 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Members of the partnership are committed to |

32 | 33 | | maximizing the advantages of their access to a deep-sea port and |

33 | 34 | | international markets to create a local economy that will drive |
