45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Mujeres Unidas/Women Together seeks to provide
67 shelter and support to victims of domestic and sexual violence; and
78 WHEREAS, Established in 1978, Mujeres Unidas is dedicated to
89 providing crisis intervention, counseling, and prevention
910 education services to women, men, and children suffering from
1011 abuse; the nonprofit is led by a board composed of community
1112 representatives from diverse backgrounds, and assistance is given
1213 to those in need without regard to race, gender, national origin,
1314 age, disability, or religion; and
1415 WHEREAS, Among the agency's important services and programs
1516 are a 24-hour crisis hotline, an emergency shelter, and legal
1617 advocacy; Mujeres Unidas also helps women with children become
1718 independent and self-sufficient through the Nueva Vida
1819 Transitional Supportive Housing Program, which assists with
1920 referrals to community resources, on-site GED and ESL courses, life
2021 skills classes, and day care; and
2122 WHEREAS, In addition to supporting the victims of abuse,
2223 Mujeres Unidas strives to educate abusive partners; led by trained
2324 health care providers, Men Against Violence is a 24-week batterer's
2425 intervention program that teaches offenders to take responsibility
2526 for their behavior and to explore nonviolent problem-solving
2627 methods; furthermore, the agency reaches out to the community with
2728 training for students, volunteers, and medical, criminal justice,
2829 and other social service agencies; and
2930 WHEREAS, On April 18, 2015, the agency is hosting the sixth
3031 annual Walk In Her Shoes 5K Run/Walk/Community Awareness Fair;
3132 during the event, men are invited to walk the course in high-heeled
3233 shoes, raising funds and demonstrating that all individuals should
3334 take part in protecting their fellow citizens from violence; and
3435 WHEREAS, Domestic abuse and sexual assault continue to
3536 devastate the lives of numerous Texans, and Mujeres Unidas is a
3637 vital resource in the effort to help victims become survivors; now,
3738 therefore, be it
3839 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
3940 Legislature hereby commend Mujeres Unidas/Women Together for its
4041 service to Hidalgo County and the Rio Grande Valley and extend to
4142 all those associated with the organization sincere best wishes for
4243 the future; and, be it further
4344 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4445 prepared for the organization as an expression of high regard by the
4546 Texas House of Representatives.
