5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Members of the San Antonio chapter of the AFL-CIO |

6 | 7 | | are observing Workers' Memorial Day and the 44th anniversary of the |

7 | 8 | | establishment of the Occupational Safety and Health Act on April |

8 | 9 | | 28, 2015; and |
---|
9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Signed into law by President Richard Nixon in 1970, |
---|
10 | 11 | | the Occupational Safety and Health Act went into effect the |
---|
11 | 12 | | following year on April 28; over the decades, the landmark |
---|
12 | 13 | | legislation has impacted the lives of countless private sector and |
---|
13 | 14 | | government employees, preventing work-related injuries, illnesses, |
---|
14 | 15 | | and fatalities by providing training and implementing workplace |
---|
15 | 16 | | health and safety standards; and |
---|
16 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Workers' Memorial Day is an internationally |
---|
17 | 18 | | recognized day of remembrance for men and women who have been |
---|
18 | 19 | | injured or killed while performing their jobs; with this year's |
---|
19 | 20 | | theme of "Mourn for the Dead, Fight for the Living," this occasion |
---|
20 | 21 | | provides a solemn reminder of the crucial need to make workplaces |
---|
21 | 22 | | safer; and |
---|
22 | 23 | | WHEREAS, The AFL-CIO represents 56 national and |
---|
23 | 24 | | international labor unions with a combined membership of 12.5 |
---|
24 | 25 | | million people; dedicated to advocacy and grassroots organizing, |
---|
25 | 26 | | the San Antonio chapter has greatly advanced the federation's |
---|
26 | 27 | | mission of safeguarding workers' rights, improving safety and |
---|
27 | 28 | | health regulations, protecting employees who report workplace |
---|
28 | 29 | | violations, and promoting the rights to organize and earn a decent |
---|
29 | 30 | | wage; and |
---|
30 | 31 | | WHEREAS, Workers in every field can safely perform their jobs |
---|
31 | 32 | | if they receive the necessary training and equipment and if the |
---|
32 | 33 | | highest standards of safety are upheld, and it is imperative that |
---|
33 | 34 | | employers, employees, and organizations across the Lone Star State |
---|
34 | 35 | | and the country work together to ensure that worker safety receives |
---|
35 | 36 | | the attention and support that it deserves; now, therefore, be it |
---|
36 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |
---|
37 | 38 | | Legislature hereby honor the San Antonio chapter of the AFL-CIO for |
---|
38 | 39 | | its significant efforts in behalf of area workers and commemorate |
---|
39 | 40 | | its celebration of Workers' Memorial Day 2015 and the 44th |
---|
40 | 41 | | anniversary of the Occupational Safety and Health Act; and, be it |

42 | 43 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
