45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, A full and generous life drew to a close on August
67 14, 2013, with the death of Jean Mills Worsham of Houston at the age
78 of 91; and
89 WHEREAS, Jean Worsham was born in Houston on December 5,
910 1921, to Annie Lee Mills Worsham and Jesse Lee Worsham Sr.; he was a
1011 member of the second graduating class at Mirabeau B. Lamar High
1112 School, and he went on to earn a bachelor's degree at The University
1213 of Texas at Austin, where he was president of Phi Delta Theta
1314 fraternity; his leadership of the fraternity's intramural football
1415 team earned him the lifelong nickname of "Coach"; and
1516 WHEREAS, Answering his nation's call to duty during World War
1617 II, Mr. Worsham served with the U.S. Army Air Forces in Japan;
1718 after the war, he earned a law degree at The University of Texas and
1819 won election to the legal fraternity Phi Delta Phi; and
1920 WHEREAS, Over the course of an exemplary career as a lawyer in
2021 Houston, Mr. Worsham served as an assistant district attorney,
2122 worked in private practice, and spent 25 years in the legal
2223 department of Shell Oil; he was a member of the State Bar of Texas
2324 and the Houston Bar Association, which honored him for his five
2425 decades in the legal profession; and
2526 WHEREAS, Mr. Worsham gave back to his community with his
2627 service on the boards of the Methodist Hospital and Lon Morris
2728 College; an active member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church, he
2829 served on its administrative board and taught Sunday school; he
2930 remained devoted to The University of Texas throughout his life and
3031 was a member of the Littlefield Society, the Chancellor's Council,
3132 the President's Associates, and the Longhorn Foundation, as well as
3233 an avid fan of Longhorn sports; for more than 50 years, he was a
3334 member of the Houston Country Club, where he played tennis into his
3435 early 80s; he also loved books, travel, and music, especially big
3536 band and Dixieland jazz; and
3637 WHEREAS, Mr. Worsham shared 60 years with his wife, the
3738 former Roberta Murfee, and they were the parents of three sons,
3839 Robert Mills Worsham, James Leslie Worsham, and the late John
3940 Murfee Worsham; with the passing years, his family grew to include
4041 five grandchildren, who affectionately called him "Danrad"; and
4142 WHEREAS, A devoted family man and an engaged member of his
4243 community, Jean Worsham leaves behind a legacy that will continue
4344 to inspire all those who knew and loved him; now, therefore, be it
4445 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
4546 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Jean Mills Worsham and
4647 extend sincere condolences to the members of his family: to his
4748 wife, Roberta Murfee Worsham; to his sons, Robert Mills Worsham Sr.
4849 and his wife, Roxanne, and James Leslie Worsham and his wife,
4950 Leslie; to his grandchildren, Kathryn Anne Worsham, Jesse Lee
5051 Worsham, Robert Mills Worsham Jr., Samuel Price Worsham, and Asha
5152 Elizabeth Worsham; to his brother, John William Worsham, and his
5253 wife, Arline; to his nieces, Gail Worsham Pitt, Cynthia Worsham
5354 Bowers, and Anna Larson Worsham; and to his other relatives and
5455 friends; and, be it further
5556 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5657 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
5758 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Jean
5859 Worsham.
