5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The Corpus Christi Independent School District's |

6 | 7 | | Office of Food Services and its director, Jody Houston, have won |

7 | 8 | | well-deserved national recognition from Food Service Equipment and |

8 | 9 | | Supplies magazine; and |
---|
9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, A feature article in the magazine has highlighted |

10 | 11 | | the success of CCISD's Food Services, which operates in the black |
---|
11 | 12 | | while providing a nutritious lunch to nearly 80 percent of the |
---|
12 | 13 | | district's 38,694 students every day; and |
---|
13 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Long recognized as one of the most efficient and |
---|
14 | 15 | | financially sound school food-service programs in the nation, the |
---|
15 | 16 | | program relies upon the Gertrude B. Applebaum Food Service Center, |
---|
16 | 17 | | a state-of-the-art central kitchen built in 1997 under the |
---|
17 | 18 | | direction of CCISD's director and assistant superintendent, |
---|
18 | 19 | | Gertrude Applebaum; this 81,000-square-foot facility prepares bulk |
---|
19 | 20 | | meals for all elementary schools and prepackaged meals for schools |
---|
20 | 21 | | without kitchens, and it also packages fruits, vegetables, salads, |
---|
21 | 22 | | sandwiches, and baked goods for all the schools in the district; and |

22 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Jody Houston, the current food service director, |

23 | 24 | | started working with the district in 1982 and played a vital role in |
---|
24 | 25 | | the design of the kitchen, which was built without interior walls to |

25 | 26 | | make movement more efficient and to allow the staff to adapt quickly |
---|
26 | 27 | | to changing needs; the center fields two shifts, a day shift for |
---|
27 | 28 | | baking and prepackaging meals and a night shift for bulk satellite |
---|
28 | 29 | | operations; the kitchen also stands ready as the City of Corpus |
---|
29 | 30 | | Christi's emergency feeder, in the event of a natural disaster; and |

30 | 31 | | WHEREAS, Benefiting from skilled and innovative management, |

31 | 32 | | economies of scale, and the latest in food-service technology, the |

32 | 33 | | CCISD Office of Food Services provides tasty and nutritious meals |

33 | 34 | | to thousands of schoolchildren with impressive speed and |

34 | 35 | | efficiency, while spending its budget wisely; now, therefore, be it |

35 | 36 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |

36 | 37 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Jody Houston and the Corpus Christi |
