5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Charlie Mae Smith was inducted into the African |

7 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The hall of fame is part of the African American |

8 | 9 | | Education Archives and History Program, which since its founding in |

9 | 10 | | 2002 has focused on the vital role that education plays in the |

10 | 11 | | African American experience in Dallas County; the organization |

11 | 12 | | preserves important artifacts, documents, visual images, and oral |

12 | 13 | | accounts, and its African American Educators Hall of Fame raises |
---|
13 | 14 | | public awareness of the significant contributions made by teachers, |
---|
14 | 15 | | administrators, librarians, and others; and |
---|
15 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Through her love of reading and libraries and her |
---|
16 | 17 | | civic service, Ms. Smith has contributed greatly to her community; |

17 | 18 | | a Rosenberg native, she earned a bachelor's degree from Prairie |
---|
18 | 19 | | View A&M University and a master's degree in library science from |
---|
19 | 20 | | Texas Woman's University; she became the first African American |
---|
20 | 21 | | member and president of the Duncanville Public Library Board, and |
---|
21 | 22 | | she also served on the city's Board of Adjustment; and |

22 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Ms. Smith is currently a member of the board of The |

23 | 24 | | Black Academy of Arts and Letters, and she is a life member of Delta |

24 | 25 | | Sigma Theta Sorority; she has been recognized by KKDA Radio and the |

25 | 26 | | Jack Lowe Education Recognition Program; she was also named an |

26 | 27 | | Oliver Wendell Holmes Classical Academy Living Legend, and the Paul |

27 | 28 | | L. Dunbar Learning Center in Dallas named its library media center |

29 | 30 | | WHEREAS, Through her outstanding accomplishments, Charlie |

30 | 31 | | Mae Smith has made a positive difference in the lives of countless |

31 | 32 | | Texans, and she may take justifiable pride in this prestigious |
