45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Charlie Mae Smith was inducted into the African
67 American Educators Hall of Fame on April 18, 2015; and
78 WHEREAS, The hall of fame is part of the African American
89 Education Archives and History Program, which since its founding in
910 2002 has focused on the vital role that education plays in the
1011 African American experience in Dallas County; the organization
1112 preserves important artifacts, documents, visual images, and oral
1213 accounts, and its African American Educators Hall of Fame raises
1314 public awareness of the significant contributions made by teachers,
1415 administrators, librarians, and others; and
1516 WHEREAS, Through her love of reading and libraries and her
1617 civic service, Ms. Smith has contributed greatly to her community;
1718 a Rosenberg native, she earned a bachelor's degree from Prairie
1819 View A&M University and a master's degree in library science from
1920 Texas Woman's University; she became the first African American
2021 member and president of the Duncanville Public Library Board, and
2122 she also served on the city's Board of Adjustment; and
2223 WHEREAS, Ms. Smith is currently a member of the board of The
2324 Black Academy of Arts and Letters, and she is a life member of Delta
2425 Sigma Theta Sorority; she has been recognized by KKDA Radio and the
2526 Jack Lowe Education Recognition Program; she was also named an
2627 Oliver Wendell Holmes Classical Academy Living Legend, and the Paul
2728 L. Dunbar Learning Center in Dallas named its library media center
2829 in her honor; and
2930 WHEREAS, Through her outstanding accomplishments, Charlie
3031 Mae Smith has made a positive difference in the lives of countless
3132 Texans, and she may take justifiable pride in this prestigious
3233 accolade; now, therefore, be it
3334 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
3435 Legislature hereby congratulate Charlie Mae Smith on her induction
3536 into the African American Educators Hall of Fame and extend to her
3637 sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further
3738 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3839 prepared for Ms. Smith as an expression of high regard by the Texas
3940 House of Representatives.
